Valve Clatter

I am using motorcraft 5W-20 oil with a motorcraft filter and have always used motorcraft filters. For the last 4000 miles I have had a loud valve clatter for the first second after a cold start. The problem won't go away, even after I changed the oil recently. Any suggestions?

Thats normal it just takes a few seconds for the oil to reach the top part of the engine. Next oil change try Mobil 1 synthetic and see if that helps.

ok, well it didn't do it during the first 24,000 miles or so, but the motor runs fine once warm. I'll try Mobil 1 next time.

Just make sure it's the filter with the anti drainback valve. I've heard some here that have picked up the wrong one before.

Exactly... Your described symptoms can, more often than not, be attributed to the use of a subpar filter. Make sure you are good there.

Take it to the dealer and have them re-cal the PCM.

There is a TSB out for this.... worked awesome on mine.

I'm using and have always used the Motorcraft FL-820S. I change oil between 3k and 4k miles. I've tried a few brands (PZL, Valv, Motorcraft) and this problem started with Castrol. I went back to Motorcraft on the last oil change but the problem still remained. Why did this start suddenly?

I wish I were psychic so I could tell you. My only other suggestion is to take it to the dealer if you're still under warranty. Wish I could be more help. Maybe someone else will chime in. Good luck.

Well, if it's just for one second, I would not worry about it. If it happed for 5 seconds (which is what happens with a no-valve filter), then I would be worried. One second is not going to hurt anything at all.

cam phaser and timing chains, get your dealer to look at it, The noise will happen with any filter, booth Ford, Fram, Ect, oil filter made no differance on my 04 and it the engine running with no oil sound just get louder and lasted longer until Ford delt with it.

Fix it now, or you pay the Ford People later.

Ford2004F150 When you brought your truck to the dealer and they recal'ed your PCM how would that help with oil getting up to the top of the motor quicker?

NORMAL!!!!! The PCM reflash has nothing to do with valve chatter for 1-2 seconds on startup, the cam phaser has nothing to do with this either.....Cam phaser problem is only after engine is FULL hot and idling and it will tick. These are 2 totally different problems. You don't want them fixing what aint broke and they probably won't anyway if they don't hear the phaser problem (which it doesn't sound like).

Well the Ford people say they found a bad right side cam phasor. They are replacing it now. We'll see if this fixes it...
