I've had that same problem in my '98. It happened twice and had 2 different causes. The first was a bad mass airflow sensor, it needed to be replaced. I tried cleaning it and that's when it finally threw a code. It drove fine as long as I kept the RPM's over 850-1000ish.
Second time was 2 vaccuum leaks, but it threw a lean code and ran like crap pretty quickly. That one made a sucking noise at idle/low RPM tha was pretty easy to hear.
Hope that helps.

I have had idle problems for over a year (just like your having)....took it in and they told me i had bad gas, took it to another dealer and they told me they could not find anything. It finally got so bad the last time it stalled the engine light came on, and stayed on. This time when I took it in, they replaced the throttle body. Now the truck runs better than the day i bought it.
