04 Rear End Whine Back in the Shop

This will be the third attempt to fix this problem. I now have 35K miles on my 04 Screw so any more attempts to fix, if this one does not work, will cost me a deductable. Are any of you guys with later models having this problem? What ever they do each time it works for a while but then the whine comes back. I'm thinking they should replace the complete rear end instead they just keep replacing the ring and pinion. So now they have me in a Mini Van waiting to see what they are going to do. One tech told me its just a noise, the thing isn't going to blow up, just turn the radio up if it bothers you. Glad he's not the one working on my truck. Anyway just wanted to vent

I have same problem on my '04 with 3.55 L/S rear dif. At 30,000 mi. they added friction modifier as the fix. The noise is back at 35,000 & I'm with you, fix it or replace it. I was told that warranty conditions checked prior to the end of warranty period do carry over if the condition returns. Hope so.

Good luck, let us know how you come out with the dealer.

Ford won't let dealers replace the entire axle assembly anymore unless it's for a special reason, like a problem child truck that's close to buy back. It costs them too much money.

There's a lot of junk gearsets floating around out there that FCSD is trying to pass off as normal. I personally have gone through two or three complete axle assemblies on trucks I've worked on before I finally got one that stayed quiet.

Same here, had mine done with less than 2K on my truck...You need to insist on a over-haul, I would bring in the TSB that documents the problem..(not sure which one it is, maybe someone else knows)...

Goodluck, I remember how annoying that was.

No need to insist, this will be the third time it has been over-hauled, The problem is it doesn't seem to stay fixed. The dealer has been great all along, but it sure suck driving this mini-van around. They called last night and said it would be done today. Now I have to wonder if I can hook up the boat this comong weekend for a trip to Laughlin or do I need to let the gears seat? Oh well I'm going anyway.

$ 989.00 later I've got my truck back, they completely rebuilt the rear end, only took them 4 days but for now there is no whine. Just have to wait and see if it lasts. Good news is warrenty covered it all Bad news is there are grease stains everywhere, door, glove box, center consul, even the rear fenders. Oh well.

I think you are not supposed to tow on new gears for 500 miles to let them wear in.

I have had and currently have the same problem. They first replaced the clutch packs due to the shudder. That didn't fix it so they replaced severaol parts (including the ring and pinion and the shudder went away and I had a very slight whine. The whine got louder and they replaced everything in the rear (they claimed). The whine went away but came back in about 4,000 miles. took it to the dealer and they "couldn't hear a thing" and I wouldhave to wait until it got worse or drive 2 hours to see a factory representative. I wrote Ford (better than calling or an e-mail) and they called me and said they were going to investigate further. Didn't hear anything for 2 weeks so I wrote them again with my original letter. I quickly got another call and they said the dealer was supposed to contact me but they are now sending it up to the next level and if I haven't heard from them in 2 weeks to call back. This is the week. I have 14,000 miles on my 04 with 3.73 LS rear.
