Truck broke, then fixed, now what?

My '05 Lariat SCrew 4X4 with a 5.4 and 26K on the odometer was towed to the dealership yesterday. The diagnosis was 2 fuel injectors had stuck open. Along with the 2 new injectors, they replaced 2 coil packs, 2 spark plugs and changed the oil. After running a series of tests on it the service guys said everything checked out okay.

When I picked the truck up I asked the service manager if I should be concerned about the possiblity of the other 6 injectors going bad. He shrugged his shoulders and said "Can't tell you for sure, you might want to look into getting an extended warranty."

Well great, that was a real vote of confidence. Do I need to be concerned about having similar problems in the future, not worry about it, or investigate taking the extended warranty route?

My wife advised me that I'm keeping this truck for a while so parting with it in the next year or two is not an option. This was my first warranty issue of significance with the truck and I'd like to hear what everybody has to think. From what I've read on this forum the injector/coil issue is not uncommon.

Thanks for the input!

In my opinion stuff like this could happen to you on any vehicle you own. If you like driving the truck think about an extended warranty but dont fool yourself into thinking of it as more than what it is... insurance.

I will just say that of course you are going to think that bad injectors are a common problem after reading here. In fact, they are not a common problem, but it just sounds like you had some bad luck. I think that problems sound common on this site since many people come in with a concern about something, and they (we) all concentrate here. I say you will probably be fine.

2006 F150 STX (4.6L)

at 4000 miles it died, would not start.

10 days at the dealership, they replaced an injector, injector rail, and ultimately the PCM. Runs fine now, feels better, maybe slightly better mpg.

Still, made me wonder when it will break next...knock on wood.

Places like this forum can be bad news for people who like to worry. Taken in isolation even the most commonly reported problems we see here effect only a small portion of the hundreds of thousands of F-Series that Ford has produced. The fact remains that all vehicles have problems and these trucks are still far superior to pickups that were built even 10 years ago.

Hopefully that is good for me since my 94 F150 4X4 work truck has not had any problems, other than ones that I have created , and it has 160,000 miles and still going strong!!

As for the warrenty, I wouldn't do it. For the amount of money that you pay for the warrenty itself, $1,800 for the one the dealership offered me, will fix alot of things. And since this is the first problem with the truck, you would probably jus be throwing your money away, IMO.

2005 with open injector

My 2005 F-150 FX4 with 22k miles got the "check engine" light on the way home during a vacation. The truck was shaking all over and it smelled of gas very strongly. After pulling off the road and letting it cool down, the engine would not start for several tries. It went back to shaking and smelling like spilled gasoline. After a tow to a local dealer, they found one injector that was wide open. Fouled the plug and blew the 02 sensor.
The dealer said they see a lot of bad injectors on the Triton engines.
