Question for Quintin

Hey, I have had issues with ping and have the k/n dropin and saw in a previous post that a sensor can be fouled with oil from the filter causing bad readings and the ping problem as a result. How is that cleaned and where is it?

Thanks.

Have you cleaned the filter and maybe put too much oil on it or do you think it might have come with too much oil. I have the drop in, cleaned it at 17,000 and now have 27,000. Not had any pinging. Of course I am deaf, sometimes that can be a blessing. For future reference, I too would like to know where the sensor is exactly and how you get to it.

I just have a hard time believeing that it is causing that. Did it start with the recent change in gas formulations to ethanol or has it been there for awhile? Hope Quintin chimes in, or someone else with the sensor info.

No, it's been happening since I got the truck, but I bought the k/n at the same time so I just want to see if the sensor thingy (pardon my technobabble) is fouled.

I did have the tsb done to take care of the ping, but still pings. I also did try high octane premium gas and it didn't ping with that fuel.

The sensor you're looking for is the the mass air sensor, which is mounted on (going off memory, and I ain't walking out to the parking lot to look at mine) the driver's side of the air intake tube after the air filter. I don't really advocate cleaning it without good cause (i.e. lean codes and/or false baro readings) though.

Thanks Q, guess I'll have to drop in a paper filter and take it in to the dealer again.

I have been around the same block with the ping Stealth. I swapped back to the motocraft filter from a K&N, cleaned the MAF, its right where Quintin says and is super easy, took 10 minutes just make sure you have a set of torx bits. I have been running 89 octane and I had a motorvac service done last week. Taken together these things havent eliminated the ping but it has improved. I am tempted to say that I might just have to live with the really little bit of pinging that I still have. The final test will be if the pinging persists when I finally buy and install my Edge.
