"How-To" 2005 F150 Foglight HID Retrofit/Rebase

Hello All,

Long time no talk to, I've been busy enjoying my LS430 bixeon retrofit for my 05 F150.

Now I'm going to do the fog lights which already have an excellent cuttoff, though I realize a more powerful HID bulb will not get a perfect cuttoff like it has now, it'll still be pretty good.

Here is the project. Not to spend a lot of money like a did on the headlights.

Part 1.

Find out how to and do a rebase of D2R bulbs to fit a 9005 application (most similar to my fog lights which are actually 9145 bulbs) or I'll use a 9145 bulb to create the rings to mount on the D2R bulbs. DO NOT mount the new rings to the D2R bulbs permanently so I can figure out how they need to sit in the fog light for aiming purposes.

Solution: Take a 9145 or 9005 bulb and grind the base off with a dremel. Hollow out the inner part of the ring which has the tabs which allow the bulb to sit properly in the socket. Make the circumference on the inner part of this new ring wide enough to fit around the newly smoothed edge of the D2R or D2S bulb. After making sure it's all lined up by test fitting the performance in the headlight, use JB weld to secure the ring to the D2R or D2S bulb.

Part 2.

Find a good pair of OEM HID ballasts for a cheap price.

Solution: I found a set of denso ballasts and D2R bulbs on ebay for $165 shipped to me! It was a great deal.

Part 3.

Cut off the base off a 9145 or 9005 bulb and figure out which pin is positive and which pin is negative. This base will be used on the new wiring harness to plug into the OEM wiring harness so my inside controls work as normal. This will also prevent the OEM harness from being damaged.

Part 4.

Look in the HID University forum for a How-TO on building a harness for these HID fog lights. Once again this will be cheap safety to keep the OEM harness safe.

Part 5.

Install the new harness. Running my grounds to the same places as the LS430 retrofit and pluging the 9005/9145 plug into the plug on the OEM harness on the passenger's side. Run all the neccessary wires behind the bumper and make sure they're covered.

Part 6.

Mount the OEM HID ballasts in a safe and secure place. Plug the ballasts into the wiring harness.

Part 7.

Put the rebased D2R bulbs in the fog lights and plub them in at night. Rotating them to figure out which part needs to be up and which part needs to be down. Once this is figured out, pull each bulb and secure the rebase rings to the D2R bulb with JB weld.

Part 8.

Enjoy the heck out of OEM HID in the headlights and fog lights.

Part 9.

Post pictures of the cuttoffs from the fog lights and then from the LS430 to have the HIDplanet guys critque and help me re-align.

Feel free to provide links, help, or any other information to help me out with this project.

LOL! Well it's going to take awhile. Finding the parts cheap will at least take a month. Then piecing the thing together will take awhile because I've been so busy with work.

BUT, then end result will be lighting that is beyond awesome. HID in itself blows halogen away. I can't imagine what QUAD HID will look like. I can only dream for the next month while I build it.

THEN, I'll be doing a LED retrofit in the taillights since nobody is building an OEM set of LED taillights.

Hey Fellas,

Well I scored an awesome deal on ebay!

2 Denso ballasts and 2 phillips D2R bulbs for $165 shipped!

So instead of buying a cheap kit off ebay for $250 for this project, I will complete this project with quality OEM parts for under $185.

As soon as I recieve Krazy's bulbs I'll turn around and post them here for sale again since I won't need them now. That is unless I screw up when rebasing these bulbs. Then again I could also save them as a back-up set of bulbs since I don't expect the life of these D2R bulbs to be very long in my truck. Every time I arm or disarm my car alarm, the fog lights flash on and off. There is no way for me to disable it, so the HIDs will get flashed on/off at least four times a day.

Now it's time to look at the HID University link and buy the parts to build a harness. I've also updated the "How-To" above.
