help 01-03 or 04+?

I had an 04 stx scab black, cruise, 37gal gas tank, 3.73 rear, tow, fogs, carpet delete and had to sell in divorce, got a lincoln ls for good $$ but now divorce final, and I want to get a truck to tow jetski. I have xplan and see the 0% rebates and would like to trade the ls for another 04+

looking at stx again but still 20k plus after rebates for same and i loved the the truck but 3 things i hates, no power windows/locks, easy stain on cloth and no tach. I noticed that the old bodystyle is much cheaper and I could get a loaded xlt flareside scab 02-03 for about 13k.... with 4.6

outside obvious design changes:
is the 02-03 engine that much worse for mpg or performance then 4.6?
can you get a 5,4 xlt scab?
are the hop up chips the same?

any other major things to steer away from for older models?
