Me personally, I'd take it off, and put it in a lave. After a few grades of sand paper, you could run some metal polish over it.

but I did notice while installing my exhaust today that my DS is quite rusty, and quite puny looking compared to my V6 S-10's DS. They don't build 'em like they used to.

On my 03, my Joints are rusted, but the shaft it self looks fine

I honestly can't see a few ounces of paint distributed evenly on our HEAVY driveshafts, could cause an out of balance situation...not likely. Also, our DS don't really get a precision balance in a mass production environment...thats why we see so many members who get their DS replaced because of out of balance conditions. If you have a good DS and want to paint it evenly with POR 15 to improve looks...go ahead.
