I looked uder my truck yesterday and it has very very little rust on it...its basicaly "discolored" in a few places. My trucks almost 2 years old. I wonder why mine isn't rusty and some of the ones on brand new trucks are?

I was thinking the same thing. I wouldn't do it unless you've got a lift.

I hear what you guys are sayin, but its one of those things that dosent look good on a truck. I, IMO dont like a rusty truck. So a rusty DS, even tho its normal just isnt my style.

Hear me out, I REALLY wouldn't do it unless your lifted. Why? Why take the chance of messing up something, just to have the piece of mind that your DS is painted. Its not my truck of course, but thats just my advice.

I was thinking the same thing and what about if you got paint on the u-joint? Im not sure if the paint would just 'grind' off of the u-joint or what it would do.

Me personally, I'd take it off, and put it in a lave. After a few grades of sand paper, you could run some metal polish over it.

J/K,

but I did notice while installing my exhaust today that my DS is quite rusty, and quite puny looking compared to my V6 S-10's DS. They don't build 'em like they used to.

b.c you live in the south, not much of a salty winter, IE less rust.

On my 03, my Joints are rusted, but the shaft it self looks fine

One last question; I know that driveshaft's are precision balanced. Any chance that painting it could cause an out-of-balance condition?
POR 15 is brush on and dries reasonably quick...just do it on the truck, then rotate for complete coverage...mine took under 10 min.
I honestly can't see a few ounces of paint distributed evenly on our HEAVY driveshafts, could cause an out of balance situation...not likely. Also, our DS don't really get a precision balance in a mass production environment...thats why we see so many members who get their DS replaced because of out of balance conditions. If you have a good DS and want to paint it evenly with POR 15 to improve looks...go ahead.

I've lokoed on the lots in MI at new Dodges, fords etc. Not uncommon to see some rust color on the driveshaft etc underneath.

What'd you paint it with?

What about the U-Joint? . . any caution around that area?

I used Krylon Rust Tough Enamel spray paint. If it doesn't hold up I'll redo it with POR15.I just spayed a very light coat over the u joints,it shouldn't bother them.

As long as the driveshaft doesn't fall out from underneath the truck while going down the road, why worry about the rusty driveshaft?

It is more visible on a 4x4 and looks like crap. Some may not care if it looks like crap or not. When my truck gets older I probably won't care either but for now I do because my truck is still new.
