Whats the difference between the HD AWD system and the regular 4wd system offered on the standard F150s? The reason I ask is the AWD on the Silverado SS is just like the 4wd system on the standard Chevy trucks...you just can't turn it off. I am thinking the HD system is the same way.

Well i know driving in 4wd on dry cement or asphalt will screw the transmision or somthign(thats what the dealer told me, could be a gimick just go make me buy this over AWD) and in AWD you can drive on dry cement.

The HD AWD system is more akin to a dual LSD/Viscous Limited slip than your regular 4wd on the F150's. It is designed for traction on pavement and speed. Your regular F150's 4WD system would throw a fit over 50 MPH.

Yeah...I know the definitions of each...thanks! BUT what is the actual difference between the AWD system in the HDs and the 4wd systems in the standard trucks? Is the front axle different...is the transfer case different? What parts are interchangeable? I can assure you they have more in common than they you think....if they didn't the AWD option on HD would cost way more than it does.

I think I get what you are asking. basically hes asking what is the difference because it seems like both 4x4 and AWD have two diffs (a front and back) that both have a driveshaft going to them and LS or not whats the difference between that and a 4x4? They seem pretty similar...I think it is just that the front diff is always in drive like the rear diff and it probably is a different setup in the front like different gears/axle. Thats just my guess.

I read in a description somewhere that you could actually turn the AWD off....let me see if I can figure out where I read that now.

There was confusion because everyone said it was basically a 4x4 at that point.

Not on the HD, the switch(like the standard 4x4 switch) has AWD and 4HI, thast it. Idk how you would turn it off

Well my 99 Expy had a switch just like that...Auto 4wd, 4HI, 4LO. Kickass has the right idea of what I am asking, but no one seems to be able to answer it. I really doubt there is much difference in all between the AWD HD and a 4wd Lariat or Fx4. Just relabled AWD. I know thats all they did with the Silverado SS.

Its not the same diff at all. It is an AWD system, above you said you know what that means. No flame meant, just saying think about it. Think of the old Typhoon, or a Mit's 3000GT VR-4, or even Audi's quatro system. These are dual limited slip differentials. A 4wd system from an FX4 is going to be torn to pieces at hwy speeds. Different tools for different jobs. I wouldn't trust the AWD system on the HD in a mud bog, just like I wouldn't drive on the freeway in 4Hi.

The difference, I think, is that the front and rear driveshafts are not linked together mechanically, but more of a LS between the two to allow slippage to keep from breaking components.
