Bed Extender Installation

I recently traded in my '04 for an '06 and kept my bed extender. On the '04, the posts that the bed extender snaps onto screw into the holes in the bed. The holes on the '06 aren't threaded - there is an insert welded in, but it is smooth without threads. Did they change the way the posts are inserted into the bed on the later models? Thanks. Jon

Nope, you have to buy the posts from ford, and wratchet them in.. The holes are not threaded, but you will thread them once you install the posts...

I wondered about that. I do have the posts, but noticed the holes weren't threaded. It did occur to me that the posts would make threads when screwed in, but I wasn't sure. Thanks. Jon

Yep, just make sure they are straight while you screw them in, and you will be good to go..

Just curious, would this cause rust in the area because the bolts will scrape off the paint in the "plugs"?

cddavis,

I installed the mounts when I borrowed a buddy's bed extender, and removed them when I was done. I moved to a wet environment, and there is light rust in the threaded holes now. I found this thread because I'm looking for a bed extender for a 2003 Screw, and am trying to find the mounting pegs (since nobody sells their extenders with this hardware).

I'm planning on cleaning, sealing and installing the hardware, to stop the rust, and , well, to have a bed extender. hope this helps

My buddy did this on his 04 F150 and hasn't had any problems with rust.

I did it on my '06 that I just picked up, kept the extender out of my old truck to put in this one. The bolts take a T-50 Torx I believe, just straight in, it's actually pretty easy. There are also some bushings (I think that's what they called them) that go into the holes above and below the post. It's what the locking pin on the extender slides into. I believe they were about $8 a piece for those and about $20 each for the posts...can't remember for sure though.

Not certain but, I believe the handwritten P/N down in the bottom corner is what you're looking for...

I believe that it's the same PN for 04+ as it was for the 01... might double check that though....
