Towing a Explorer

Hey guys just reading some posts and just remembered I have to ask this question. I'm going to be moving down to NC in the next couple of months, and was trying to figure out what's the best way to get my wife's explorer down there with us, I would rather have the car towed down there rather then both driving down there, plus I get to see how this truck will pull something . My question is this I have an 05 FX4 3.73 LS 150. It does not have the tow package but does have the tranny cooler and the power steering cooler, Would I be able to tow a u-haul trailer with my wife's 04 explorer and my quad in the bed of the truck. Or would I really be getting to the limit of the truck. I just checked the u-haul website and they say that the car is tow heavy for the trailer, do you guys know any other company that just rents trailers and not a place that you have to rent a truck to get a trailer. The reason why I ask is my father has a 22' box truck that he would drive with all our stuff in it to get it down there. I just figured that we could save some mileage on the wife's car because she has so many miles on it already. Thanks in advance.

From what I have learned about the '04 Ford Explorer is that it has a curb weight of 4469lbs. The weight of an empty U-Haul auto carrier is another 2000lbs. This plus the weight of your quad should be below the max rated for the F150. Depending of course on extra gear/passengers. Unfortnately the U-Haul trailer is only rated for 2 tons so you will have to try a different approach. I would think that your F150 could handle this load but you may have a hard time getting the setup that you want at a cost you are willing to pay. I think the auto trailers rent for about $250.00 and for that price you probably could drive the Explorer, even with the high fuel prices, for cheaper.

I once saw a New F-150 towing another new F-150 on a trailer. The F-150 was struggling very bad as you can hear the engine straining, and the rear end was way down. The Explores aren't that much lighter then the F150's, so I'm guessing by what you want to do, this might be to heavy for you.

I have a '04 F150 with the 5.4L and the 3.73 LS gears. I also have 35" BFG mud terrains. So that makes it lose some low end torque. But anyways, I towed my sister's '02 explorer on a flat bed steel trailer when her tranny was screwing up. My truck pulled it just fine. I pulled it approximately 30 miles with no problems at all. Then my Dad pulled in another 100 miles and said he had no problems. I have a 2.5" leveling kit and it didn't sit the back end down too much. I do have an true dual exhaust and airaide intake system, but I hadn't put my Troyer programmer on yet. So from my experience I would say that your truck could pull a trailer with your wife's explorer on it.

The truck will pull it just fine. If you figure out what to haul it on let me know, I have a 76 Caddi. I want to move about a 3 hour drive in a few months.

Not a problem. I know these trucks can pull a good amount of weight, I've seen guys towing full race trailer's with their F-150's and they don't have any problems. You just have to make sure your not a lead foot when you tow. Thanks for the help guys.

james,

when i bought my wife's explorer sport (2dr version) last year, we did the U-Haul trailer all the way from southern maryland to Buffalo, NY (empty) and all the way back with the explorer on the trailer. my '04 FX4 did just fine. although it was a bonzai run of about 16-17 hours on the road all in one day!

no worries, your truck will tow it just fine.
