Engine Noise on Start Up After Oil Change

A couple of days ago I changed the oil in my truck and had to suffice with what the local autoparts store had in stock. I used Valvoline Durablend 5W-20 and a Bosch oil filter. Now my truck has a 1-2 second rattle after starting up if it has sat for a while.

This noise was not present until I did the oil change. I can't see the oil being the problem, so I believe it is the filter not holding oil properly. The noise is exactly the same type of noise you get the first time you start up after an oil change and you do not prefill the oil filter.

Has anyone had this problem with Bosch oil filters? I also purchaced a different oil filter today; can you change the oil filter without draining the oil on these trucks?

Put on a filter with a good silicon anti-drainback valve. You will have to replace about a pint of oil.
Do it cold.
Oil changes should be done with the oil warm to get all the impurities in suspension, but in this case do it cold.
You will spill some oil, better if it is cold when it hits your hand. Also, cold most the oil will be in the pan, as obviously the drainback valve is not working...

And add Bosch to the growing list of filters that should be avoided on these trucks.

So far Motorcraft, Purolator, Mobile 1 and K&N are the only ones that seem to do the anti-drainback right on these engines.

Bosch is a very "good" filter so I don't think that is your problem..I have used them, and know others that have used them for years without any issues.
They have a very well designed anti-drain back in them..

I have had this problem with my truck for the past year. The rattle only happens when the truck has not been used for say... at least 8-10 hours. Ignition, *rattle*, and it starts chugging fine.

I have had oil changed... I have added oil... I have made sure gas is full tank... I have had a mechanic switch out the filters...

I have pretty much done everything and it still does it. This issue is really bugging me but I didn't know how to explain it, so if you get a fix please let me know what you do so I can do the same. Good luck!

I had the same problem when I did my first change. Soon I found out with these truck you have to change oil when cold. I used Puralator filter....therefore I dont think it is your filter. My problem cured itself after about 1 or 2 cycles of start and drive. Now I know better not to change oil when the engine is hot...never had problem since.

I would go for the oil filter being the culprit. I use to use the cheap fram filters and I had the same 1 or 2 sec. rattle. I now get the middle grade Fram with the anti-drain back valve, and no more rattle. The oil drains from the top of the engine and rattles a sec. until the oil gets back up top. I vote for the oil filter.

I am sure that at least the higher grades of Bosch are fine filters. I used to sell three levels of 'Bosch' filter, made by three different companies.

Everyone has multiple grades and multiple quality lines.

However, the low end of 'Bosch' filter is the choice of several quick oil change franchises and all of them have reported problems with rattle sounding oil changes.

I have listened to dry starts at the local lube and tune lots of times. The owner is an ex-employee of mine, and an old friend so while I do my own service, I do sometimes drink his coffee and hang out.
He has recently switched to Motorcraft filters, but only on the modular Fords.
The sound of rattling cam followers was getting to his guys, not to mention the occasional observant client.
He still sells the Bosch for most other uses, and has been quite satisfied. They pre oil the filters (it's a good shop)

I use brands with proven drain back valves and always top up my filters before installing. I only change hot and I have NEVER had a rattle on startup.

I stick with the Motorcraft oil and FL820S so I don't have to worry about things like this. Plus, it's one less excuse the dealership can use against me if I have any oil related engine problems.

F1AZ-6731-BD, also known as an FL820S. The only filter to use on these engines.

I've seen too many problems with cold start up noise with other filters, even ones that advertise drain back valves. Replace that filter and go from there.

Thanks for the input everyone. Changing the oil filter to a Motorocraft got rid of the noise.

I've always been a WIX fan, but I think I'll put on a Motorcraft tonight. Thanks for all the info guys. I'm believing that this may be my problem too.
