Question 4r75 Transmission ?

I know it has been posted here before but I searched and could not find it so I will ask. I have 2004 scab and it has a very hard 1-2 upshift. My question is will reflash of PCM smooth it out. All other shifts (up and down) are smooth as glass. I have 1714 tuner but it does'nt seem to affect at all.I have put stock program back in so I can take to dealer. I just don't want to get there
and they tell they all do it.

Thanks

I cannot help you on your specific application, but I have two questions: how long have you had the truck and how long has this been a problem? My father's '04 Scab XLT shifts very smooth up & down. I ask how long this has been a problem, because if it's a recent thing something could be wrong. I ask how long you've had the truck because asking this question >2years after buying the truck is an awful long time

I have the same tranny on my '06 and had no problem at all...smooth as butter. To be honest, it was too smooth. Look into another tuner if the dealership doesn't help. The Edge and X-Cal II both can help with the shift firmness (or making it less firm in your case).

The truck has been doing it for a long time,(started with-in 1st year). I can live with it but it would be nice to have it a little smoother. It is almost like it changes from 1-2 to quick. I was just hoping the reflash would take care of it and also the hesitation on accel. The tuner I have took the hesitation out but did nothing for the very hard shift. I have changed shift pressures around a bit but still no smoother.

When I got my truck I felt that it shifted to smooth. I guess I'm used to high performance cars that have a REAL positive feel to them when they shift -- especially 1st to 2nd. I also had a slight hesitation under part-throttle acceleration. Occasionally my truck seemed to get confused when downshifting while slowing down for a red light, and going part throttle because the light changed before I came to a full stop. The truck would downshift & upshift real harsh.

While attempting to fix my speedo during a gear swap Ford reflashed my PCM with the latest & greatest. It fixed the part throttle hesitation & the truck didn't get "confused" anymore. If I remember right there is a TSB out for the truck getting confused during the scenario mentioned above.

I'd suggest taking the truck in and asking for your PCM to be reflashed because of the hesitation problem. Mention the shift harshness if you want, but drive around on the new reflash for a bit to see how it feels. If it still shifts hard tell them you think something is wrong. If they say "they all shift like that" drive one on the lot with the same tranny/motor as yours. One of you is bound to be proved wrong!

I had an early build date ( 01/05 ) lariat screw, same trans as you, that had a real bad 1-2 upshift, enough to make you cringe when it happened. PCM code was TEM7. Dealer reflashed pcm and it was totally fixed. Brother had the same problem with an early 05 build FX4 ( 12/04 ) , PCM code TEM6 and reflash fixed his too.

There may be a PCM update that'll help allevate the harsh 1-2 a bit. Check with your dealer.

Hard shifting is a warranty issue. These cars were engineered to have soft, smooth shifting.

Hard shifting is good if nothing else is wrong. The Edge/Gryphon tuners specifically tune the shifts to be firmer in order to prolong transmission life.

In order for an auto to shift smoothly, two gear bands are temporarily engaged at the same time which in turn lowers the trannys life span.

I don't know how hard a shift you call a hard shift, but if a number of Ford mechanics told me everything is fine, I would be happy about that. That doesn't mean you have nothing wrong however since I haven't driven your truck. Internet diagnosis is just that if you know what I mean.

No, that description doesn't sound normal... Have you been able to demonstrate that kind of hard shift to a technician?

My truck shifts smoothly but I had a Lincoln Town Car that I gave my daughter that has been doing that for at least the last 100,000 miles with no problems. Fluid has been changed at least twice to correct torque converter shudder.

Today it shifted fairly smooth for me. but its liable to start doing it tommoro. I just wonder if the electronic throttle confuses the computer sometimes. The mechanics that drove it said that it shifted normal into second. I think i notice it best when i turn and i'm taking off , its like it bumps into second. The dealer said it showed no codes. They said they checked the line pressures and for clutch slipping, and said it all checked out ok. maybe i need a computer reprogram again?
