Exclamation variable fuel light?

Okay- so Im running low on gas- the light pops on, so i finish my errands, and pulll into the conoco station and fill'r up- (mind you i have the 35.6 gal tank) and feed my baby 34 gallons of gas. yes, my light came on 15minutes prior in 'in-town' driving totalling appx. 2 miles. leaving only 1.6 gallons of gas in my tank. does that seem right!!!? im getting 10 mpg in town- which means, my 'running low' light means if you're on the highway at 15mpg, its your 'better call AAA' light.
-this is verified by the fact that 2 mos ago, my low fuel light pops on, and 20 miles later im high and dry on the side of the road 50yds from the gas pump.

ideas?

JJ

That's odd. I have the 30 gal. tank and if I drive around for a little while after the low fuel light comes on it never takes more than 26 gallons.

I've asked before but never got an answer. How does it know how much gas is in the tank? Is there a float in the tank or some other mechanism??? Mine went off on flat ground and had almost 6 gallons or roughly 90 miles left. I don't bother with the light anymore, just trained to stop at 1/4 left for gas. When my car points downhill the gas needle dips, it also won't physically go under 1/4 tank (problem with gauge faces) so I just watch the odometer, 330 seems to be the magic number. Anything over 300 and parked downhill and it doesn't start.
