Motorcraft Oil filter

Anyone know the part number for the Motorcraft oil filter for a 04 F-150 with 5.4 engine? I looked it up and it is showing two different numbers. One is longer than the other, so which one should I use?

My 05 4.6 is the same way... I think it depends on the date the vehicle was made... I called ford and they told me...

The fl820s is the motorcraft filter, and the PH2 is the Fram sure grip, that is the one i use. The sure grip is easier to remove and install by hand.

Some use the 820 some use the 400. Look at the filter on your truck. They are shaped differently. You can tell by looking at the filter, and seeing if it is short and fat or tall and thin.
Dealer can also tell you.

I've always been told girth was more important than length.

I had a friend that used to do some outside sales for Fram. He said their filters were pretty crappy and that Fram got into using cardboard for part of the filtering material due to cost cutbacks. Thats just what I heard though. I haven't used a Fram since.

Quintin can probally verify this but I've been told by Ford to NOT use fram filters, especially on these mod motors.

yup, the NAPA store near us has one cut open on a sales display to promote their NHRA approved filter. I was suprised that they were indeed cardboard inside. Basically, pretty junky looking inside compared to the other brand. And I always thought FRAM was a good filter !! I would just stick with the Motorcraft one, only about $3 at a local w-mart.

Another thing is they seem to have weak anti-drainback valves. A lot of people get valve clatter during a cold start.

I developed an rear seal leak on a Ranger I had once after about the 4th oil change. I carried it in and the dealership told me the same thing. The Fram filters cause motors to build too much pressure at the seal and oil was blowing by, plus they were not good filters. Swapped it back to a Motorcraft and the problem went away. Haven't used one since.
