06 F150 - Won't go into 4X4 Low?

I can't get the truck to shift into 4x4 low. Both lights (Low and High) come on when the truck first starts up, but I can never get the light to come on (or it to engage) into 4x4 Low. When I am in High and switch to Low, sometimes the High light stays on. Only 1800 miles on her, but it sounds like I am going to the dealer and I hate that more than anything. Any ideas?

Yeah, make a list and check it twice. Knock out the problems all at once.

Not trying to insult you, but you do have it in neutral w/ brake pedal depressed right?

Are you comming to a complete stop and in neutral when shifting to 4Low? If not, it won't work.....

This is going to sound completely crazy, but when I tried this earlier today, I was on a very steep boat ramp with it stopped and in neutral (brake on obviously)...I could not make it go into 4WD Low. I was just out messing with it again (now on level ground) and it will go into low. ??

This is why

I prefer manual transfer cases to those electronic ones. At least on my 2005 XLT I can yank on the lever to put it into the mode/range I want.

gotta put it in neutral. Mine makes a loud "THUNK" when I put it in 4x4low. Is that normal?

How long does it take for 4 low to engage? I was playing with mine the other day and thought 4 low didn't work. I had it in 4 High, stopped and put it in neutral, set the switch to 4 low and the 4 high light went out but the 4 low light never came on and I didn't hear any noises like I expected. I put it back to 2 hi and 4 low light came on! No matter what I tried I could only get 4 low in the 2H position and 2 wheel in the 4 low position. I turned the truck off and started it back up with the switch in 2 Hi. The truck was in 4 low. After flipping the switch all over the place while in Park, neutral, drive and reverse I finally got things back to normal. I drove it home and messed around with it in my driveway. Everything worked as expected but I noticed if going into 4 low it takes about 15-20 seconds to engage. If you move the switch from 4 low before it actually engages things get messed up. Is something wrong here or I just need to have paitience when put it into 4 Low?

Not that it matters, but I don't understand why you would need 4wd low on a boat ramp. I haven't spent a lot of time with my 05 F150 in 4wd low, but I can tell you that most of the trucks that I have owned before like to have a little bit of room or slippage before they engage into 4wd low.

If you were just looking for some extra traction on the boat ramp, 4wd high should do just fine.

The brake pedal has to be pushed in as well as be in nuetral and come to a complete stop.

It turned out to be plenty, but it was a very steep and slick ramp, pulling a heavy boat full of people so I thought I would go with the extra to be safe.

Yep, I was in neutral and brake was fully depressed...but no 4x4 Lo. I tried it again today and it seems to be working, I will keep an eye on it but all seems ok now. It was the first time I had ever tried it, so maybe it just didnt engage the first time or two....who knows.

Unfortunately I couldn't get my Screw with a manual transfer case. I HATE pushbutton 4x4. I like to be able to feel the transfer case engaging. That's the main thing I miss about my old Tahoe sport.

Gotta do the stopped and neutral thing, i also give it a few seconds.... seems like it takes forever, but you can hear the gears engage if you don't when you first move it will and will hard, make a clunck, i like to use my 4 low at the boat ramp as well just so that it gets used once and awhile as well as i like to also use the parking brake then to for the same reason, keeps things moving and lubed.

just my .02
