Grinding sound at idle. Can you help diagnose?

Hey Guys,

So I've had a grinding sound at idle ever since the accident. It's not a constant noise, or something that happens all the time. It's usually about 50% of the time. I'll be sitting in the truck at a light or very slowly moving forwards or backwards and the steering wheel can be in any position.

All of the sudden I'll have a grinding sound like two pieces of metal vibrating together very hard and loud. Sometimes the noise will be soft, but often it can be so loud as to attract attention from people on the outside of the truck.

One thing I could compare it to, is the sound you hear when someone is trying to shift a manual transmission and grinds the gears because they stink at shifting.

I thought it was my magnaflow SIDO exhaust so I ignored it for awhile. Well yesterday I took the truck to an exhaust shop to check for loose connections and weld them up. Well he came in and asked why I wanted to do this, because I don't have any loose connections. We thought possibly it was the brackets that mount to the frame in the rear and the hangers that hold up those pipes. Well we welded thoughs to the frame and welded a spot where the "nub" gets dangerous close to the frame. Because it looks like that could have been vibrating.

Well on the way home I was pulling into the garage and it did it again. SO I guess it isn't the exhaust.

Now I need to go to the dealer because I'm starting to get worried and I need to go there with an idea of what the heck this could be. Because I don't want them to say it's your aftermarket exhaust, we won't look at it.

Please help,

Duke

I don't know if it's the same sound your hearing, but mine used to make a vibrating sound (could be very loud at times), almost always when backing slowly out of my garage. It turned out to be the intake where it connects to the fender. I put some soft gasket type material between the intake and the fender.........no more vibration....no more sound. Your situation may be totally different, but I thought I'd reply just by chance that it is not.

Hmm, I'm about to take off for work. But I'll pop the hood and check that out.

Just took it to the body shop and they heard the grinding noise. They think it has to be a vibration due to engine idle level makes whatever it is vibrate.

However, now at the dealer they can't replicate it and act as if it's not a big deal.

Just to show how much they don't like me the service manager just walked by and said "Hey, how are you doing, out slumming today?". This was in a crowd full of people in the service room.

Didn't really understand what he was getting at, but sounds like a smart comment saying, we know you don't like being here and think we're idiots so get lost.

Oh well, guess I'll go somewhere else.

The heat shield above the muffler looks loose when we crawled under looking for this grinding noise.

Anyone had something like this?
