Overhead dvd and leather partially installed!

Well i have been busy since i got home from vacation in Florida. First i washed the truck and installed my 20's back on. Then i started removing the back seat and removing the C pillar to see if i had wiring there for the overhead dvd. It was! All I had to do is make a harness to go over to the overhead rail system. I made a harness and installed the dvd player and it works perfectly. I can now run an Ipod into the aux. jacks if i want. So it can be done, but it's a pain to do. While i had the rear seat out I put my new leather covers on too. I now have a FX4 with the Lariat fold down arm rest! I also installed 5 washers under the rear seat frame mounts to lift the seat up so that my Musicmoose sub box will fit all the way under the seat now. I also found water under the drivers side rear door sill plate, and it is either the rear window leaking or the third brake light leaking Now it looks like a trip to the dealer...

The factory harness was wired up to the "C' post on the drivers side. You have to remove the rear seat back and then unbolt the seat belt hanger and remove a bolt that is above the seat belt hanger under a plastic cap. Remove the sill plate cover, just pull up. Then pull on the plastic molding off, it is just held on by clips. If your truck came with the overhead rail from the factory, there is a good chance that the wires are to that point in the back. There will be 2 plugs about door handle high, 1 blue, and 1 grey. If there's alot of wires in those plugs, then you probably have it. You will have to get a diagram. I got mine from the service writer at the dealer. I don't know why they just don't spend the $30.00 and put in in every truck with the rail system. I think that they would sell alot of dvd players if they did. I now see why you can't just wire it up to the pie adapter, I was playing around with the dvd player tonight, it lets you change things on the radio from back there. You can listen to the radio, and the people can use the headsets to listen to the dvd, or you can use the headsets to listen to the radio while the movie is played through the truck speakers. I also made the wire harness a little longer so i could move the dvd player on the rail so that the front seat people could watch a movie if you were parked somewhere.....

Didn't yours say dvd prep package? if so, its up there. Check your window sticker to see if it is on there. You will have to go to the dealer and find out where to cut the hole into the head liner to get at it. Also didn't you change your head unit? If so, the factory dvd player wont work, you will have to buy the one that bolts to the rail, but it will be wired differently.

C post, or C pillar is a method of describing the section wear the roof meets the body, starting from the the front of the vehicle. The front area where the roof meets the body (windshield frame/door frame area) is called the "A" post/pillar, then between the front and rear doors is called "B" post/pillar then rear is called the "C" post/pillar.

Thanks for clearing that up! I'm wondering if you can buy the wiring harness from the dealer? Did you fish the wires through or did you have to pull part of the headliner down?

You can buy a harness. Here is a part number for the harness that was specifically for the truck that the dvd player came out of. (5L3Z-14335-MA). List price was $85.00. I had the parts dept. run the VIN number of that truck and thats the whole roof harness. The harness had wiring for a sun roof, but not the rear power slider. What i was going to do was buy that harness and just swap the pins out in the plug connector. The wires are color coded and match up perfectly. I pulled the door seal down and was able to fish the wiring over to it real easy. There is a spot at the "B" pillar that is a straight shot over to the center of the overhead rail system. Then there is enough room next to the edge of the headliner to run it to the back "C" pillar plug location. I used an old car antenna to push under the headliner to the center of the rail and taped a rope to it and pulled that back for a pull rope.
