Dumb question about 4.56 gears....

I have an 06 4x4 and I want to put 4.10's or 4.56 gears in it. If I just do the rear gears will it cause a problem? I understand that I cant use 4 wheel drive obviously, but as long as I dont use 4 wheel drive it will be fine right? And I do have a 9.75" rear axle and an 8.8 fron axle right? But im assuming that i cant use gears from a mustang in the front cause they have t be reverse gears, right? So if im correct, what gears are out there besides the ford 4.10's, and the Yukon 4.56's? Part numbers?

Well, yes your right in the sense that you would be fine as long as you didnt use the 4 wheel drive... However if your going to regear one axle, do both. Never just re gear one axle on a 4wd... Spend the extra 700-900 and do the other one as well.... I would never want to be trying to sell a truck with one axle with 456 and the other with 373..... JMO, do it right or dont do it at all...

Well I would never try and sell the truck to someone with two different gear sets. The only reaon I ask, is what if I hate the 4.56 gears? Then I have to do a double swap again. That would be dumb, but I seriously doubt that I would hate 4.56 gears, cant see a reson why I wouldnt. Whats the going best price for a swap on both or just the rear for 4.56?

I agree. You should have 3.73s currently? I dont think 4.10s would be worth spending $1500-2000 IMO. What are you trying to accomplish? towing? Performance? Going to bigger tires?

Anyone have 4.10s that could shed some light? I could be wrong...Although it would be the first time

Ohhh, I wonder...With 3.55s do you still have the 9.75 rear? What do you want from your gears? Towing?

Well I do have a 6500 pound travel trailer and a 500 pound quad that I pull every once in a while, maybe up to about 200 mile trips. Other than that, its really just a performance thing. Dont want to tear into the motor, and every mustang I have had with gears has been hands down faster and more fun to drive than ones with gears. What other mod for that price or less can get you that kind of performance gains, just curious. And yes I do drive a lot on the highway. I drive 120 miles 2 times a week, but thats only for one more semester of college. The fuel economy doesn't bother me, cause I can back off on how fast I drive and settle for maybe 2 mpg worse fuel economy.

I think I have decided on 4.10's for my truck but here is some info that may help you decide.

4.10 ---> 2110 RPM
4.56 ---> 2347 RPM
this is what was a reply to my post that I did.

Well if I do the 4.56 gears I will keep the factory tires and wheels on it. If I dont do this I will being with some Chrome Black Rhino 20's and doing a drop on the truck. I have always had lifted trucks, and I think these trucks look better with a drop and bigger wheels to fill the wheel well in some. Its notr a race car, so I may go with the 20's, its about the same damn price to do 20's and a drop.

Not to bring this back up but it sounded like you were saying that he should just get the 4.56's because it cost so much. And if he drove highway alot his MPG would go down so i was stating that it would not be a good idea.

Well, I found a friend of mine thast a certified mechanic to do the gears for $400. So how much will the gears run me? I have been reading around and see that maybe the lightning has the same rear-end as my truck, is that correct? So then I would just have to get a reverse gear 8.8 set, right? Thanks guys.

I believe any 4.6L equipped truck has an 8.8" rear end. Any 5.4L equipped truck has the 9.75". Someone correct me if I am wrong.
