Question for those with 4.10 gears and stock stance/tires

Anyone put 4.10 gears without raising the truck or getting bigger tires?
I know that it will increase fuel economy in the city and decrease on the highway and also lower the top MPH but by how much? I don't spend to much time on the hwy, maybe only 10 trips/year so I wouldn't mind the extra fuel economy in town but I also have the 4x4 and realise it would be more expensive.
Also, does it effect towing capability? If I do this mod the stance will stay the same, if not be a little lower.

It would help you towing. I'm not sure about fuel economy but I wouldn't count on it saving you that much in the city. On the highway you'll take a little bit of hit but again espically if you don't drive on the highway it won't be huge.

I just had my 3.55's swapped out for 4.10's. Although I'll be having my front end leveled next Saturday, right now the trick sits stock.

First I'll hit on the speedo problem. If you do a search you'll see a couple of threads I started about Ford not being able to correct your speedo. In summary, 4.10's were not an option for a 9.75" rear until 2006. I was told they cannot flash my truck to '06 because of emissions. I bought an Edge and couldn't be happier.

Another thing the Edge lets me do is monitor Average MPG. With a mixture of city & highway, with Edge on Level 1, I average 16 mpg. The more I move, up to 70 mph, the higher it climbs. The highest I've gotten to so far is the upper 18's. If you sit & idle it steadily drops. If I drive over 70 mph I settle into the mid 15 mpg range.

Changing gears has absolutely nothing to do with the stance of your truck. It also will not, per se, change your towing capability. However, you'll notice it to be easier to take off from lights, etc...

I switched to 4.10s with stock tires.. I didnt notice hardly any difference in MPG.. Highway or city. Certainly DOES help with acceleration.

Now im running a smaller than stock tire. I do notice a loss in highway MPG with the smaller tires, but its worth it to me.

If I had it to do over again, I'd gone with 4.56s. Me personally, I couldnt give two hoots about gas mileage. Gasoline prices will continue to rise for the rest of my life, so i better get used to it and have some fun while its still cheap (Compared to what it will be in years to come).

weaseled,
I already have the Edge so I have should have no problems with telling the PCM the new gears.
The reason why I'm asking about stock stance/tires is because raising the truck and putting on huge tires will affect MPG so I wanted to know what the difference was in MPG between stock everything (3.73 or 3.55 gears) compared to stock everything with 4.10 gears. It's not much of a comparison if you compare the MPG of stock 3.73 or 3.55 gears to raised 10", 37" mud boggers and 4.10 gears. That's what I was getting at with asking about stock stance/tires.
The Edge will tell me the MPG difference AFTER I purchase and install the gears but I was hoping for some insight before I do that. I realise that the price of gears (especially for my 4x4) will most likely never be paid off by the difference in MPG but performance is also a plus for doing the regear.

Excellent point.

I had Ford do the install, and they charged me $1,300 out-the-door. They then discounted me $225 because that's what it was going to cost to have a 3rd party company calibrate my speedo. I wish I would have had my Edge prior to the swap, but it just wasn't needed at the time.

Altho I'm running 285/60/18's they're the closest I could get to stock sized tires. Prior to the gear swap my speedo was reading 2 over @ 70mph (according to GPS).

I'd say go for it! 4.10's are a great around town gear -- especially if you plan on staying with near stock sized tires (I consider <33" near stock). As stated above, acceleration will improve greatly. I'd say the improvement will be along the lines of comparing the stock tune to Edges Level 2 tune!

lol, so far I haven't tried Level 3. I figure I'll give it a try when premium is under $3 per/gallon! With 87 Level 2 feels really good with .5* timing added!

My truck is 4WD. If you have Ford do the install make sure they order the proper gears!!! Tell them you have an '04 or '05 (which ever one you have), but tell them they need to order the 9.75" ring & pinion from an '06. In '04 & '05 the only option for a 4.10 was in the heavy duty F-150 which has 7-lugs & a 10.25" ring gear. I can provide you with the part numbers & stuff they used on mine if you want.

I just put 4.56 gears in my FX4 screw and i have 33' tires with a leveling kit.... I haven’t gotten the Edge yet, that will be next week, but the truck is completely different driving... It launches with very little throttle and accelerates much faster than before... One of the biggest reasons for doing the gears was for towing... when i went up to a 33' tire with 3.55's, towing my 6500 lb boat SUCKED... I would defiantly recommend doing 4.56's if you are going to do a leveling kit with 33' tires. I have slight gear whine around 45 but its not that noticeable... most 4.56's no matter how perfect you get them in will whine a little.....remember not to run synthetic right away, you want to break them in on non synthetic for around 1000 miles before you switch back.... I only have like 130 miles on the gears now....i waited for 100 miles before i hit it hard and only have been driving like 10-15 miles at a time....Also dont tow for acouple hundred miles

Thanks weaseled. What are those part numbers? My Father's a partsman at Ford so I'm sure he could figure it out but if you've got the numbers I'll know 100% I'm ordering the right thing.

1 x F75Z-4630-AA - Cone ($24 list)
1 x F3TZ-4630-AA - Cone ($17 list)
1 x F975410 - 4.10 Ring & Pinion ($350 list)
1 x 88REV410 - 4.10 Ring & Pinion ($240 list)
1 x B7A-4662-A - Spacer, Pinion ($5 list)
2 x XL-3 - Additive, Oil ($3.73 ea list)
7 x XY-75W90-QLS - Oil, Axle ($11.87 ea list)

They should charge for 11 hours of labor also. Unless your father gets a good discount, try to get this done thru the Accessories Dept -vs- Service Dept. The Accessories Dept typically charges less per/hour than Service.

I hope im not hijacking this thread but ive been searching all day and all of y'all seem to have been through what i want to do so if you could offer some advice i would appreciate it.

I have an 04 4x2, 5.6 ( reg cab) on 33's w/3.55's. In school i ran up and down the interstate alot so it wasnt bad. However, I am moving to Charleston in a couple of weeks so I will be in beach traffic and my commute to work will be 1/2 mile.

I have a 1500# grill and a pair of jet ski's i tow. I will have to travel some for work so would the 4.10's be the best overall option? Should i order the gears online and have someone install them or just take the truck to the shop and let them do all the work? Also, alot of you have the edge which i would love to get but am i going to have to get it to get my speedo right?

Thanks in advance for your help!
