Is 500 miles to the tank possible???

I have a '04 F150 Supercab w/5.4 motor. I've been watching the milage like a hawk for the past couple of months. I would fill the tank till almost overflowing and run it till the lights come on. I did this about 4 times and got a consistent 320 miles per tankful (22 gallons). This works out to about 14.5 miles to the gallon, city driving.

I did a couple of 280 mile runs (Miami to tampa) and got there with 1/4 tank left. By the time the lights came on, it ended back at the 320 miles. This was a disapointment since I thought the milage would have gotten better due to mostly highway driving. The speeds were mostly in the 70-80 miles per hour range .

This weekend, I had to drive a moving truck back to Tampa. My wife was driving the F150. We filled up just as we were leaving Miami and she followed me all the way. I had to set the speed at 60 miles per hour the entire way. When we arrived at Tampa, I took at look at the fuel guage in the F150 and it read just a hair below half tank. Since I know that the miles driven was 280, I figure I could have gotten 500 out of the tank = 22.5 miles to the gallon.

Does anyone think this is possible?? Next time I am going to do a llooonnnggg drive and see what I get, just hope I don't run out of gas.

I get 500 M.P.T in my Sprinter, but thats got a diesel that gets 25mpg. Since my F-150 gets half that, I dont ever expect to see 500 M.P.T unless I go to a 46 gallon tank.

I also have the 27 gal tank and don't think I could get much over 300 miles on a tank with my truck.

Although I've never tried to do 500 miles on a tank, I do average 17.7 mpg and have a 30 gallon tank. That would mean I'd run out of gas at around 531 miles. I repeat, I've never tried to do it, but if my calculations are correct, it can be done.

Oh, man- I usally get around 500MPT. But I have the 35.7 Gallon tank. I have an 04 SCAB 5.4 4X4. The best I have ever gotten was 550 on one tank, pretty much all interstate driving. It sucks though to pull up and drop $80 on a fill up, but I love the fact that I can go 2+ weeks on a tank, or drive for 8+ hours on a single tank.

Best I ever got was 671.3 miles on 34.8 gallons which equates to 19.2mpg.

On the stock tank don't plan on running anywhere near 500 miles. These trucks are heavy, and they love fuel.

One thing I have noticed with my Edge, which displays average MPG, is that anything over 70 and my fuel economy decreases. I wish I would have gotten my Edge before I swapped from 3.55's to 4.10's as a referrence, but hind-sight is 20/20.

1) Mixed city & highway (under 70) I'm able to get up around 16.5 mpg.
2) Mixed city & highway (over 70) my truck dips down to low 15.x mpg.
3) Some city & lots of 4LO pull outs on the beach I was down to 7.5 mph

This is with an '05 FX-4 4WD running the stock 18" rims with 285/60 Terra Grapplers. All estimates above were with Edge set on Level 2.

I have the 35.7 gallon tank and the first time I ran it until the fuel light came on I had 510 miles and it took 34.13 gallons for 14.94 MPG. I checked it this afternoon and I have 453 miles and its still just a little over the 1/4 tank mark so I may get better this time.

With the 27 gallon tank, upon fill up the message center will be somewhere around 420-440 miles to empty. I can go about 320ish before the low fuel light comes on. If I pushed it, I'd probably have another 70-80 miles at least before I started walking after that. I average 300-320 miles before filling up.

Not to be the voice of opposition but I have been routinely getting ~465 between fillups in my stock SCab (27 gallon tank). I usually can put in about 25 gallons at a fillup which means that I have 2 gallons left. At 19 mpg that puts my M.P.T. at 503.

Here in Texas the land is flat and the roads are straight. There is only one traffic light between home and work so there is very little stop and go traffic to deal with in my daily commute.

I agree that these trucks are heavy, but if you drive them conservatively you can get decent gas milage.
