$200 for spark plugs?!!!!!

The local ford house wants $200 to change my spark plugs!!!

I would normally do this myself, as I have in the past, but with all the stories I've heard, I'm not sure that I'm up to the task.
I'm just over 26k miles, so I thought I'd have the dealership do it so that I wouldn't have to worry about it... and if they break something, they fix it... either as the ones doing the work or as warranty work.

But DANG! $200!!!!!!!!

That leaves me with 3 options:
1. Cough up $200
2. Try it myself and hope I don't screw anything up
3. Wing it and hope that when I do really need to replace them that they don't cause a problem...

What to do, what to do...

Doesnt seem to unreasonable.

~$10 a plug is $80
approx 2 hours labor ~$60/hr

so there is your $200

I suppose... I called another dealer and they wanted $312!
I didn't realize the plugs alone were so expensive... much different than my Focus with $5 plugs x 4!!!

The cost of the plug at the dealership is probably more than $10. I've heard as much as $17 a plug. I wouldn't do it for that cheap. An experience tech could probably do it in an hour though.

As I recall, retail on the plugs are about $17 each. I am used to buying all 8 for less than that.

I agree, $200 isn't out of the ordinary, parts and labor.

Because the plugs in the 5.4 3V (and 4.6 3V) have a tendency to seize up and get stuck, sometimes breaking off in the head upon removal. Search this forum, there was a huge thread about it a few months ago.

how about trying a local shop. They will probably go cheaper. Its not like you need the signature ford installation of spark plugs.

That sounds very reasonable. These plugs are really expensive and a few hours labor later..........On our V8's at work there are 16 plugs @ $10 a piece and 3.2 hours labor @ $88 per hour to replace them, all said and done you lookin at $450......

I haven't seen 'em first hand, but I imagine they do/will. They use the same plugs.

My shop we charge 3 hours at $80 and price of the plugs, around $11 each.

It's time consuming and a SOB to get to some of them.

Do it yourself if you don't want to spend the $$$.

Also....why change them at 26K?? They'll go 100K usually.
