Surges and engine knock

I've been looking at the threads and didn't really find it, but I know I've read it before. Anyway when I was going up a hill this morning my truck went into overdrive at about 45mph. When it did that it surged and then started to buck with and engine knock. Would a reflash fix this. My truck was built in Nov 04. It's an 05 FX4 5.4 Is my truck a canidate for a reflash.

Mine was doing that pre- new drivetrain and reflash. Did it twice inside a month during the winter.

Not sure whether all my rework fixed it or not, I haven't duplicated the circumstances yet. Mine did it under low accelleration uphill. Instead of downshifting, which is what every automatic trannied vehicle I've ever owned would do... mine would shift quickly through the gears to overdrive and sound like a connecting rod was going to come flying out the side of the block.

Did a reflash seem to help or did the other work help it. I know it would be hard to find out which one it was.

Prolly not. A lot of the "improvements" from a PCM update are so subtle you won't notice them unless you're looking real hard.

I think the super natural after results people are claiming following a reflash are in their heads. I've reprogrammed the PCM in my truck twice and I haven't noticed any significant changes after. I think the most notable changes you might see from reflashes in these trucks is a change in idle speed and some changes in the transmission shift schedule.

Some of these guys had me expecting to get back in a truck that acted like it had a supercharger thrown on it after the reflash.

It could have fixed it, I'm not sure. I think the reflash changes some shift points which seems to be what the problem is, but they replaced the entire drivetrain in my truck chasing the "vibe" and that problem while they had it. They swapped the transfer case, transmission, drive shaft, rear end, and put Michelin tires on it along with a reflash and cam phaser all at the same time... take your pick as to what may have fixed it. I'm still not sure that it's fixed. I haven't recreated the circumstances where it happened to me the two times yet. It may do it again, then they will be getting it back.
