Spare Keys

Hey folks! I know the subject was brought up not too long ago, but I need more info on getting some spare ignition keys for my 2004 F150. I checked with a local locksmith and he quoted me $65.00 I read here that they can be bought on ebay for a lot less. Can someone explain to me what I need and possibly post a link on where to get them? Anyone had any problems going this route? Thanks.

I don't think that it'd be $65 from the stealership!!

The blank key from the dealership is $20-$30. You can easily program it... the directions, I believe, are in the manual.

I bought a key... actually had my the dealership where I purchased the truck cut it (did it for free), and programmed it myself.... VERY simple process.

The keys can be had on ebay for $17ish...

It is in the manual. Some of the ebay key suppliers send the instructions with the keys. This is the most important part, you must have two keys already programed for the truck before you can program it! If you already lost one of your keys and want to get another you will have to bring it to the dealer to get another key.

My dealer may have just lost my service business. When I was scheduling to pick up my new truck, I asked about getting a 3rd set. My salesman said it would cost me $110. That's BS.

Too bad this guy is within walking distance from my house, I will now take my service business elsewhere.

I asked the dealer for a third key when I picked my truck.
Cut, programmed for $25.

That was 1999, when they first came out.
I guess back then they didn't consider them a cash cow.
Also Ford stock was worth more.

I bought spare keys for both my '05 Escape and '05 F-150 on ebay from a vendor called "streetkeys". I sweet talked the lady down at Wal-Mart into cutting them for me for free, and then programmed myself using the process detailed in the owners manual.

FYI -- I bought (5) keys for each vehicle, which gives me the maximum number of keys (7) on hand that can be programmed for each vehicle.

Whatever you do, don't mess around with this and procrastinate until you end up losing one of your factory keys and then can't program the new ones for cheap!

Thumbs up

I just bought a third key off of ebay for my 05 f150.
I got the one with Harley Davidson on one side and ford logo on the other.
Key cost 24 shipped and the locksmith liked it so much he cut the key for free.
The key I got came with instructions and was made of hard plastic, Not the cheap stuff they made are keys out of.

I found the info on the key here. Search and you will find a picture of the key.
