ran out of gas....
ran out of gas....
Yesterday on the way home from work my truck did the infamous jerk when you run out of gas. I said geez please let me make it about 2 miles to a gas station. I ended up coasting about a quarter of amile and made it entrance to the gas station. The 1st didn't have any regular gas, the 2nd gas station's credit card machine was broke. I ended having to cross the street of the beltway and purchase gas. I'll have to admit my rig sitting on the side of the road did look clean. When I walked up to it it appeared like everyone in traffic was amazed it was my truck...I'm going to make sure that doesn't happen again.
Man... I've never been so preoccupied I ran my truck out of gas.
1) That little low fuel light blinking tends to get one's attention no matter what.
2) I love my trucks (and my hard earned money) too much to damage a fuel pump
3) I'd be too embarrassed to let it happen to me (or make a post about it!)

Pff, running out of gas can happen for a lot of reasons, regardless of age or maturity. I've ran out of gas in trucks, cars, and on motorcycles, and i've been in 2 privately owned helicopters when they ran out of gas. **** happens.
Don't feel bad, I'm 44 and this almost happened to me today. My truck skipped a beat as I went to pas someone, and I realized that I had forgot to fill up before I went out today. It was below the line!
Luckily I was able to make a quick right into the gas station before I went dry. Even us old folks get preoccupied once in a while. What with trips to my sons school, the cleaners, my post office box, Lowes, and home all as my wife and clients are bugging me on the phone every ten minutes, and all within an hour or two, on empty nonetheless, can cause anyone to reach the limit.
I think I'll take the previous messangers advice and not let it run past a quarter.

Then they realized you were driving a Pollock 4wd and it all made sense to them!

Actually, anyone who has been driving for years has probably run out of gas (ok, I'm sure someone out there is perfect - besides my first wife's new husband).
Last time was about 5 years ago when I ran the Dodge Ram 1500 out of gas pulling the boat. Low fuel light came one, I told the kids not to sweat it, we have about 15-20 miles of gas. 5 minutes later, we were on the side of the interstate! The 9 year old was holding the flashlight while daddy was siphoning gas from the boat's gas tank into the Dodge! The kids still laugh at that one!
Haven't run the F150 out yet. After the gas shortages after 9-11 and Hurricane Katrina (living in Mississippi), I now try not to get below 1/2 tank.
I came close a few days ago just to see how far the new 35.7 gal tank would go. The low fuel light came on and I drove another 10 miles before I put 34.13 gals in it. The bad part was the $85 it cost me to fill it! Last time I paid that much it was for a motorhome with a much larger tank and gas was about $1.40 back then.
I am in my 30's and I almost ran out of gas out in last summer in West Texas on my way driving to Washington from San Antonio. The light came on and I went almost 50 miles before I finally saw a place.
When I did get to an exit with a station, the broad inside came out and locked the doors as I pulled up, pointed at the pumps and said "Use your credit card and hurry up - I am closing". I got some fuel, but the dude and his girl in the Honda Accord 1 minute after me had to go to the next stop (saw them later at a restaurant). The girl was really PO'd (and was squirming at the door of the closed place) because she needed to use the restroom.
I was getting nervous cause there were freaking vultures out there just waiting for someone to run out of gas.
Man, I never let it get less than half-full the rest of the way - all the way through NM, CO, WY, and MT.

Kind of reminds me of that old Vick's Cough Syrup commercial...."I am not a 4wd, but I play one on the highway."
