Switching to Ethanol Questions
Switching to Ethanol Questions
The Dallas/Fort Worth area is being forced to switch to ethanol from the additive MTBE for pollution reasons. From reading other threads, I understand that there will be some mpg lost, but have there been any other problems or known damage to our engines caused by using a blend of 10% ethanol?
A side issue is that supply is really a mess as the ethanol can not be piped in so it has to be trucked to the distribution facilities causing a shortage and a price increase. Gas is up about 40 cents over the last two weeks. Also, looks to me as if trucking it in as opposed to the pipeline adds to the pollution.

We have a local chain of gas stations that only sells 10% ethanol fuels. My wife has used it in her MR2 since it was new in 92. No mechanical or fuel injection issues to date. I have run it randomly in my F150 and have not really noticed any difference in mileage.
Thanks, I appreciate those replys. One of the older threads indicated that it did not burn as hot and so was not as efficient. That may not be the case. If your wife has used it since 92 and has had no problems then maybe there are none. I was wondering about the rubber or plastic parts and the aluminum maybe reacting to it over a long period.

Saw that story in the local paper yesterday. Funny how it didn't take long to affect someone on here. Sounds like the supply issue is all messed up right now.... 40c price jump?!
Good luck and let us know how the truck runs on it. We may be getting it down here too before long.

Ethanol is a great alternative to MTBE. MBTE is a nasty chemical.
