trailer wiring

I just picked up a trailer to haul some quads. The wiring doesnt seem to be right. the blinkers work fine, as long as the lights are off. turn the lights on.. no blinkers.. no brake lights (on trailer)

is something up with the truck? or trailer wiring?

Check the ground on the trailer. Without looking at the set up that would be my first guess.

Sometimes they work by for a better term back feeding thru the other lights. Even if it is hooked up make sure it has a good contact. They install these sometimes after painting and it does not get good contact.

That is the exact term. If you have facoty fog lamps, that is how the ground on the Fog lamp relay works. It uses the high beam element to find ground, once the high beams are turned on, it is now +12v, so the coil in the fog lamp relay drops out.

If you want a quick test, use the ground lead in the 4 pin adapter if you are using the 7 pin, or the other way around ( 7 pin's ground if you are using the 4 pin ).

Take this to the ground lug on the trailer's ground point, if you are suspecting a damange connector or harness. Again with the scrape clean prior to testing.
