still same problem, engine noise when starting
still same problem, engine noise when starting
WEIRD noise when engine starts after sitting for a couple days,, sounds like coming from front and like plastic gear grinding for a couple of seconds from front of engine,, DOES NOT REPEAT after engine has started and truck runs from point to point,, why after sitting for 2 days would this component ,,what ever it is do this ?? and what is it ?? driving me nuts,, would i have to let it sit by dealer for 2 days to let him have a ONE SHOT CHANCE of finding this thing ?
don't think they could find it in one shot and running outta warranty this fall,,
thanks for any info

How old is the truck and what kind of oil are you using?
It could be something that's called "piston slap".
After your engine sits for a long time most of the oil that's distributed onto the cylidner walls drips back down into the pan. Sometimes when this happens when you first start the engine you will hear the piston "slap" against the cylinder wall until the oil pumps up to the top of the engine and the oil control ring distributes new oil onto your cylinder walls.
If you live in a cold climate it's more prone to happen and if you use engine oil with a higher viscocity than the manufacturer recommends it could also happen.

It may be the anti drainback valve in the oil filter might be defective?
It sounds like it could be a little dry at startup.
If it's piston slap the noise is usually there until the engine warms up.That's what some Chevy guys told me,they know more about piston slap than I do.

Mine does it too sitting up for a weekend or so. As long as it doesn't blow up, I ain't gonna worry about it. I read recently that some start up noise may be from a faulty cam phaser; previously, I thought the phasers only make noise at hot idle.
weird noise
MATT, you are the closest one with noise,, with the construction paper ripping, i thought more like a piece of plastic touching the flywheel gear or another gear for 2 seconds and the truck has to be sitting for at least 1 day, (then you will hear it faint), 2 days sounds like something is going to break, then does not do it again til truck sits,, i know what valve clatter is after doing a oil change,, this is not it,, it must be something about losing pressure somewhere when truck sits that this component makes noise,, going to talk to FORD and see if i can get a answer,, if i have to will let truck sit over weekend by dealer and then i will return and start truck up with mechanic on monday,, when i have a answer will post it for you guys,, thanks,, john

My friend had a problem sililar to this for a while and one day I started my truck and it started to knock so I shut it off. I went to start it again and it would not start so I sent the truck to the dealers. It ended up being the same thing on both of our trucks, it was something to do with the timing. GOOD LUCK MAYBE THIS HELPS!
