05 FX4 Scab-mountain driving

Living in the Rocky Mountains i've grown used to using the gears on my ol' 5 speed to control speed on the long downhills. Now that the ol' truck is gone, I'm looking at an '05 FX4 Scab with the console shifter.

Wondering what experience folks have had shifting down manually to control speed. Does it work? Or must I rely on the brakes?

thanks,
Scott

im up here in the mountains, with an 05 FX4 sCab.!! putting it in 1, 2 will sufficiently control your descents- used in conjunction with turing o/d off etc you'll be set.

The downshifting works good.

I noticed that on wide open throttle the truck will say in 2nd gear for a long time so manually shifting to drive 2 gives you a good range of speed and controls your decelerating well.

I downshifted to drive 2 once when I had a little civic behind me riding my *** so close that I couldn't even see his roof in my rear view mirror. I bet his front bumper went under my rear, but he didn't hit me.

I agree. I am always in second gear going down the mountain and it works well to control your speed and not burn up your brakes.

Scott,
Im up on I-70 west of Denver a lot and usually just kick the truck out of overdrive when driving down the steep sections...very rarely have to use the brakes...Works great...
