Where do I find my Engine #?

Mine was on the left valve cover. It is a fairly long code. There are big letters on the top and smaller letters under it on the sticker, it was the smaller ones I believe.

What does the engine number mean...in other words why do you care what it is (not being saracastic...just wondering what that info is good for)?
