Exclamation Crazy Sound

Hey fellow F-150'ers... Looking for some help/advice here!!!

I have a 2005 Ford F-150 FX4 with 20,000 miles on it.

3 times now, I have heard this crazy strange sound coming from the left front of the truck. One time I was going 40, next 50, and finally yesterday 70.

It sounds like the exhaust is dragging on the ground, you prob. all heard that back in the day on old vehicles, heh heh...

I switch the 4WD switch to 4HI and it goes away... Switch it back to 2WD and it is still gone...

ANY IDEAS HERE??? This truck has been excellent!!! Besides the rear end requiring new gears, this has been the best vehicle I have ever owned!!!

THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY IDEAS... HAVEN'T SEEN ANY THING POSTED LIKE THIS BEFORE>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I think I've read here a few times about that. Something to do with the vacuum solenoid failing on the 4wd front.

My 2004 F-150 4x4 (25,000 miles) is at the dealer for the second time in a week for the exact same reason! The noise usually starts after a right-hand turn and is accompanied with a gear-like howl. It has ended with a crunching/grinding sound on two occasions, but sometimes it stops on it's own or when the 4WD is engaged.

I will post their findings if they have any.

The dealer replaced the vacuum solenoid that disengages the front hubs. They didn't think that there is any damage to the hubs even though it made some awful noises. I'll probably be replacing the entire front drivetrain after my warranty expires.

I have been having the same issue. Vacuum Solenoid.

The bad thing about it is that I took it to the dealer 3 times. The darn noise stops as soon as you stop so you pull in there its making the grinding noise and it stops and its like the dealer fairy doesn't allow it to happen while its in their possesion. Out of warranty now. so i will change that Solenoid.
