Name that tick???

The 5.4L in my 04 F150 is ticking and I can't seem to figure out what it is. It sounds like it is coming from near the bellhousing somewhere. I noticed the noise when I was at the drive-thru at the bank, and there was walls on both sides. I can hear it when I crawl under the truck also, but can't hear anything with the windows rolled up. Any ideas??

The truck has 32,000 miles on it, so I will be taking it in for warranty work. But it would be nice if I could give them some ideas to start with.

Thanks

Paul

It's probably due to your aftermarket exhaust. I notice a little ticking noise when I'm at the bank or in a drive-thru and there are walls around. I'm pretty sure it's just an echo. I never hear it while driving, even with the windows down.

Your description sounds like cam phaser ticking to me. Do a search and you will find lots of information about it on this site.

I was thinking the cam phaser tsb as well. There is a lot of info on this and I think it is an 04 issue on the F150's. Here is the #
