Low fuel warning?

Hello all, I have a 05 supercrew fx4 with a 30 gallon tank.

My question is when should I expect the "low fuel" warning to come on?

If then where would it show? a Icon or at the mileage display?

I have the gas needle between 1/4 and E, I want the warning to come on to make sure it works but I'm feeling nervous driving low.

Thanks!

The warning should come on when you have 50 miles till empty, you will hear it, and where your milleage is it will say low fuel... The nice thing about LARIATS is that the message center tells you how many miles till empty...

I have the 37.5 gal. tank, and mine comes on when there is 5 gallons left.

That said, be aware that running your tank low enough for the light to come on is a poor choice, because the fuel in the tank cools the fuel pump, and if you run it low, it allows the pump to wear out faster. Additionally, you have a better chance of gumming up your fuel filter when the pump has less gas circulating around it to draw from...

Thanks everyone for all the input, I just wanted to make sure that it works.

I had a old GMC that would peg past empty and still drive for 20-30 miles.

Most cars I had/have will show the low fuel indicator just past 1/4 tank.

Thanks again for all the replies.

I ran my needle down to the middle of the "E". The low fuel warning had been on for almost 2 days and 40 miles. I filled up with 29.1 gallons. Normally I wouldn't do this, but I wanted to drain as much of the 87 octane as possible and replace it with 91. I contemplated filling up at the end of a 14 mile trip to drop the truck off and decided not to. Probably a wise choice after being down to less than a gallon in there!

I can't recall exactly where on the gauge the needle is when the low fuel light comes on, but normally just before it does, I'm filling up with around 24 gallons of fuel.

Generally the low fuel warning comes on when there's 3-5 gallons left in the tank. In trucks with message centers, it'll also come on when there 50 miles to empty.

On my FX4, the low fuel icon will come on in the display, and a tone will sound. It is definately noticable.

Another bad thing about running the last bit of gas out of your tank is that if any little bits of trash or dirt have gotten into your tank, runnin it empty will run that crap through your filter.
