Rattle/Can't Find/Need Ideas On What To Check

I have a rattle in my 2005 Supercrew Lariat 4x4. It kind of sounds like it is in the center part of the dash and sometimes sounds like it is coming from the area directly in front of the driver towards the windshield. I can't find it nor can the service department. When you slam the drivers door you can hear the same rattle..but it "seems" to move around the dash.. "seems" to come from different parts of the dash. I have already taken the trim off from around the center area and checked the black tray. I have taken that tray out and driven the truck and it still makes that same annoying rattle whenever you hit almost any type of bump. I think it might be something to do with the heater duct system. Then again it might be under the drivers side dash. Or maybe over behind the glove box. Or.....

lol thats a pretty wide area of where the rattle might be coming from! lol

it doesn't;t sound like a bolt or a marble or something that somehow got dropped inside your dash somehow? or a pen rolling around in it? Might sound like a little weird but if something moves from the drivers side dash to the passenger side glove box, sounds like something rolling around??

most of the time I'm good with finding rattles as I do it almost everyday on mine lol but this ones tuff by the way you described it

It's Not The Ashtray

I have ruled out the ashtray. When you shut the drivers door hard you can here this rattle. It almost sounds like a vibration from something that is loose. When I say it sounds like it is coming from different parts of the dash that is because when I try and listen to different areas and close the door it "seems" like the rattle/vibration is moving. That is why I am wondering if it could be the heater/ac ducting. How can I gain access under the dash so I can watch/feel things while someone else closes the door? I have the center console and you can't get behind the dash unit (radio/cd, heater controls, etc) as it is enclosed clear down to the floor. I would like to be able to see under the dash without having to remove too many parts. And it is not something that is rolling around behind the dash. I'm really sure it is something loose or something that is bumping against something. Thanks again. Tami

I had one that seemed to come from the drivers side air vent that is right next to the radio. It seemed to come from that area, the top of the dash and the radio itself. It would rattle like crazy on any sort of bump in the road.

My dealer took apart the dash to find out it was the radio. There is a cooler fan on the radio that they said often breaks because these radios are next to horrible in quality.

They replaced the radio and I haven't had any problems since.

I have this same exact dash sound as of recently. Definitely nothing fell into any of my vents and it's not the ashtray. It's slowly getting more intrusive

do you know where exactly on your truck you think this rattle might be coming from? Is it near the windshield by any chance? Is there a difference in rattling in cold weather, and does it get better when warm??

I Also Have This Same Annoying Rattle

My truck is a 2005 Screw 4x4. I have been trying to isolate this same rattle for a month now with no success. The service manager has told me that when I have a more firm idea where the rattle is they will again try to find it. Not much help from them. I have to agree with Tami that the sound "seems" to move but I don't think that is the case. I also think it might be something to do with the ducting. I would also like to know how to get behind the dash console area. My rattle seems to be there regardless of the temp or speed.

I'd yank everything I could to find it. Radio, Trim, AC Controls, Vents, Glove Box, Ashtray and ANYTHING else I could remove and still drive it. Eliminate as much as possible from the equation. Should Help Find it. Plus with all that out there isint much in the way to get back there to fix it

try checking the black plastic trim in the bottom of your windshield, on the outside. The one that has the vent looking design. Mine had a rattle and it turned out to be just that!

The worst part about tearing your whole dash apart to find that annoying rattle is that you will usually create 2 more.

Yeah, it's definitely on the drivers side, near (if not at) where the window and dash meet (or come close). At first, it used to only do it in either cold or warm (can't remember now), and now it does it for both. Sometimes if I press down on the dash just left of the "gauge hump" in the dash near the window, then it'll go away for a few seconds-minutes.

I just fixed a rattle that was present under the conditions you described. At first sounded like it was in the dash. Read on here about the problems have had with the black tray on top of the dash. It was secure. Looked in the area behind the radio bezel. Thought I found a loose harness. That wasn't it. Kept investigating. Pulled the overhead bin. There was a three wire harness up in the headliner. It was loose. Secured it and the rattled stopped.
