Should I....Lift or Trade?
Should I....Lift or Trade?
I want to lift my truck but don't have the cash right now so I was riding by the dealer in town and noticed a black on tan lifted Lariat screw. It is an 05 with 25000 miles. It has the ProComp lift with the MX6 front and rear shocks, 35" ProComp mudders, and 17" ProComp "bullet holes." I talked to the salesman and he said I could possibly trade my truck (04 Screw FX4 19k) and have the same payments. My question is would this be a stupid thing to do pending a carfax report and of course the new wife's approval? I'm totally on the fence-neither one way or the other. I don't know! Thanks in advance!

Anyway, sounds like a plausible deal as long as the truck was built correctly and everything is well-sorted. You have to be careful buying someone else's lifted or heavily modded rig. They could have had issues they didn't want to deal with and just unloaded it. Hopefully this is not the case. Test drive the heck out of it at all speeds, on and off road if you can. Listen and look for the vibrations, noises, the wandering front-end, the shaky steering wheel, alignment, etc. You might even want to go as far as having a lift shop or a good mechanic inspect everything first. They might be able to tell if the truck was in deep water by coming across water lines under the body. Just some suggestions. I just don't want you to get screwed (no pun intended). Please don't be offended by my thoughts here if you already know all of this stuff, I just wanted to help out since I had a bad experience once buying a lifted Wrangler from a dealer. Crappy kit and crappy installation equaled a lot of bucks spent fixing it. Good luck and keep us posted.

If your really interested in that lifted truck, test drive the hell out of it. Ask the dealer if you can have it for a day or two to get the feel of that truck and to see if it has any problems if any.
Thanks guys! I know to drive the heck out of it and feel it but I don't know if there is a mechanic around my area that knows a great deal about lifts. I am new to my area and I don't know if they'll let me drive it an hour back to my hometown. I have put lifts on but I don't know exactly what to look for if there is problems. I was able to talk to the guy that traded it b/c he had just traded it and was cleaning his stuff out. He said he loved the truck but his job required him to drive it all over the country so he was getting killed gas mileage wise. He said it rode the same if not better than stock and he had had no problems whatsoever. He traded it for a 30 mpg Mazda Speed 6. I'm waiting to get a call from the salesman this morning with some figures. I'll see what he says. Any more suggestions?

Remember, the previous owners standards for what's acceptable driveability wise may be lower than what your standards are. Test drive it and get back to us on your findings. Also, since the truck is modified, the asking price should be lower than what a comparable stock truck would bring. Used vehicle modifications usually detract from value not increase it especially if the warranty is voided as a result. This should be a major negotiating point for you. Is this truck advertised on the web? Any pictures?

After that, I would go to work on prices and walk out if he didn't give me exactly what I wanted. I've never looked at modifications as being a depriciation factor but I will definitely use that argument. Like I said in my first post, I don't care either way. If he doesn't give me what I like, I'll walk out and just be more patient and keep drooling over all the lifted trucks on here until I can do mine. The truck is not posted online yet but I found this truck on here. It's the exact truck but the one I'm looking at is a screw and has M/T's instead of XT's.

I just talked to the salesman. He said that if I was interested, come by Monday or Tuesday and drive it and we can talk numbers. Hopefully I can get off work in time to head up there one of those days and check it out! I'll keep ya'll posted. Thanks again!

If you like the truck then do it. You are looking at around $4500 to lift your truck and get new shoes and socks for it. And I doubt the dealer gave him much credit for it (not like NADA adds value for after market stuff)
Ok. He called me back and told me to come down and drive it today but it wasn't cleaned up or checked out by the mechanic yet since it was traded yesterday. I drove it for a while and liked the overall ride. Not as much power loss as I expected but a little obviously. It rode smooth and felt good. There was a little steering wheel shake at 50+ but I'm guessing a little is normal with mudders. The only thing I didn't like is how LOUD the ProComp MT's were. I've ridden on BFG mudders and XTerrains and I don't remember those being half as loud. I do remember BajaClaws being pretty comparable though. That can be changed by new tires though. Overall its a pretty nice truck with everything- black leather, climate control, dual power seats with split console and middle shifter, 6 disc with Audiophile, power sliding rear window, etc. I'm going to wait and see what the dealer says and go from there. Any other suggestions guys? Thanks!
