Truck at dealership for thunk/shutter under accel... Torque converter?

Well I dropped my 05 off at the dealership today... From a stop or a slow roll when you accelerate it will THUD into gear. I can duplicate this problem with the truck in 1st or 2nd gear so I am thinking it may be the converter? Also, when the truck downshifts and then back upshifts, you can feel it shutter. Anybody experience this, or similar problems? If so, what was the fix?

Steve

well if it's shuddering,, then the TC is probably going out which intern is making the other components go out... also if you're hearing a clunk... the rear drum might be worn as well....(though i don't know how with an 05)...then again mine did it since it left the factory....
the thud is because the other parts failing is making the tranny lose prime.

Is it under warranty... if so ...it'll save you the cost of a $1,700+ rebuild

I had this shudder problem you speak of with my 2005 lariat and I took it to the dealer and they rebuilt the rear end and it fixed the problem.

Hmmm.... It sounds like its coming from the tranny area, but I guess I shouldnt rule out other drivetrain components. And, yes the truck is under warentee- it has 13k on it (this is bad luck, my cobra blew both the rear end and engine at this mileage, damnit!) but the problem just devloped about 200miles ago on my way from AZ to WA. Ill keep you guys posted...

Any more input is appriciated

Steve

If it's under warranty I wouldn't even bother worrying about it... just take it in and keep up posted. just take it in... and then afterwards take it back for every little hiccup until the warranty is out.

Let us know if the dealer gives you any trouble for having a tuner....blaming the problem on it! I'm curious as I'm strongly considering one.

Torque Converter

My truck is in the shop for the same problem you describe as we speak. Sounds like the same thing anyway. Truck would shudder upon acceleration at just about any speed on the downshift. Problem started out random, but perpetually got worse. After researching here and asking questions, some thought it might be a pinion angle concern on the drive shaft to the differential (which I mentioned to the service advisor), but they diagnosed the torque converter needing to be replaced. Said the clutches were going bad or something. Don't know the mechanical details. They are installing a new torque converter under after warranty adjustments though. I hope this resolves the problem. I have a feeling the transmission will be next. Hope that's not the case. May be time to trade up.... Good luck with yours.

Rear end, although Ive heard people getting the vibe on accel to go away by getting relfashed...but its probably the rear. Take it in theyll replace the clutch packs, ring, and pinion.

Mine had the shift clunk pretty badly when I bought it. A reflash made it mostly go away...an edge made it disappear altogether. I'm thinking it's a tranny control issue..as many have had the reflash fix it. Just my .02

What reflash are you referring to?

I've had my truck since May of last year. I get the same thud very intermittently. Truck has a little under 8K miles on it now. It seems to happen to me on slow downs at corners where you almost stop, the tranny doesn't seem to drop it into first gear, and when you ease back into the gas, at first it feel like the e-brake is on, and then thud and you go. Does that sound about the same? I haven't noticed any shudder.

Mine did exactly the same thing as you describe before the reflash. It fixed that problem, as well as making the truck feel quicker off the line etc. When I installed the edge, the problem disappeared altogether. Get the reflash, it really helped the truck. BTW, I bought mine in december of 05.
