2004 FX4 - Soft Brakes. One pump helps a lot but that's not right.

I also have the soft brake problem. Along with the hood vibration/rattle, throttle lag, and engine ticking. As long as these things can be fixed I'm not worried. I just dropped my truck off today.

My '06 stops fine. If you wanna feel touchy brakes, then you should drive an 04/5 Chevy Colorado. They are just scarry touchy.

Same thing happened to mine when the replaced the calipers for warpage problems, I have gotten use to it now, and so far with about 5000 miles since the change no wrapage.

I've had an 04, 05 and now an 06. Never a 'soft' brake pedal on any of them. I think the 06 is real touchy, slight pressure on the pedal is all it takes to stop.

Soft brakes aren't right no matter what anybody says. Mine aren't soft (yet).

Mine will go down almost to the floor if I am stopped and apply moderate pressure. If I pump it once it is much better.
I would not pay much attention to some engine "clicking". This is probably normal with a fuel injection system.
And to answer the question of rattles, mine has plenty of minor sqeaks and rattles during cold weather. The most irritating was a constant rattle at the center front of the dash. Turned out to be the wind shield wiper cowell had popped up out of place and was vibrating against my windshield.

My brakes were awesome at the beginning, but now the are spongy. I know spongy brakes ain't right, I've done enough brakes in my life. I wouldn't be so worried about the ticking if it had been there all along, it started a couple of weeks ago. I just hope its an easy find & fix. Of course we all know the "Could not duplicate at this time" B.S. that we get.

Yea, I know all about the "Could not duplicate" BS the dealer always says. I have solved most of my problems on this site. I have even had to take pictures from the site to the dealer to proove the problem exist. As you said, I had good brakes when the truck was new but now at 37000 mi the pedal goes almost to the floor. No more warranty!! Not that they would do anything about it anyway.

Soft Brakes

Hi all!

1st post to this forum!

I too have the soft brake syndrome with an '06 XLT 4x4 extra cab 6.5' bed.

Had the truck in for the recall of the messed up ABS light in the dash and mentioned looking at the brakes too.

Yep! They said they're normal. I'm sorry, but if you have to pump brakes to get a firm pedal that's NOT NORMAL.

I too had a problem this winter while wearing wool pack boots. I braked and was on the gas pedal also. I felt I wasn't slowing down and then noticed the tach still at 1,500 rpm's...quickly I lift and hit the brakes again. That definitely shortens the distance you have to stop in.

I mentioned to the service manager that maybe they'll have a recall on this too after some accidents happen. I sure hope it's not me.

I'm beside myself when I can't get service for a real problem. I haven't owned a Ford since 1992 when the same nonsense happened. I thought I'd try a Ford again but I see nothing has changed.

Well, the only ray of hope in this is that if I have to take it in three times for a safety issue, then we'll be going to arbitration.

Glen

Just got mine back from the shop this morning. Took it in for the brake pedel feeling soft, at a dead stop when I would push on the brake I could feel the pedal going down towards and almost to the floor. If I pumped the brakes It would hold pressure.
Dealer replaced the brake booster/master cylinder.........all is back to normal now.

I just posted yesterday about my soft brakes.

When I drove it home from the dealers I thought the brakes felt a little better. I was right. Today they're fine! I mean just like they're supposed to be!!!

This is spooky. All the dealer did was reprogram the ABS light for the recall and then they said that the brakes were fine.

Like an idiot, I'm standing there arguing with them.

Maybe I'm in an episode of the Twilight Zone.

OR...Could that ABS light reprograming effect the brakes? Is that possible?

Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Glen
