Under hood insulation

I was wondering the other day why we have holes under the hood for where insulation & clips would go? I am thinking about how I could silence the sound of my cold intake system more.

I checked on it today and Ford does make an insulation kit for our vehicles so I ordered it (it was about 50 bucks).

I'm curious, who has insulation already under their hood? Was this made for the Harley Davidson model maybe? Or was it something a hung over factory worker forgot who happened to run to the bathroom right when my truck came across his work station on the assembly line Monday morning?

This may help ya out. I am also planning on buying the kit to insulate the under hood.

I spoke to a couple of dealers about this and posted a thread a while back. It's kind of hit or miss as to whether or not you got insulation. From the people here to the trucks on the lot, we couldn't find any real consistancy on which trucks had it or not. Didn't matter the trim level, manufacturing plant, or year. Some had it, some didn't. Strange...

My 2004 XLT has insulation. My understanding is that all 2004 J1 trucks got it, while 2004 J2 and forward only the upper trim levels got it.

My 05 xlt screw doesnt have it. Seems like ford cuts corners on a lot of things.

For any of you guys who have purchased the kit and installed it:

* Have you noticed any change in cabin noise level after installation?

* What is the insulation made out of -- that old "fiberglass" mat that you see in older cars, or the newer "rubberized" mat that you see in some of the newer vehicles?

I would probably add one on mine only if they are the "rubberized" mats -- in my opinion the old "fiberglass" mats were just dust collectors that ended up looking dreary and dilapidated after a few years of use...

I'm not sure how much the hood insulation will help you out. You are still going to get the intake sound through your firewall. It might help a little but I can't see it helping much.

BTW...my 05 FX4 doesn't have insulation.

My '04 Lariat has it. Ford gradually de-contents models as they can over the product lifespan.
