My 04 F150 is stuck in 4x4 low. I need to get it repaired, and have to drive on the interstate to get there. How fast can I drive it in low without damaging it furthor?

Thanks.

Get it towed. Don't even try, or you'll probably cause more damage than there already is.

under no circumstance should it every be drivin on pavement in 4x4 low, nor over 5MPH! Low is very low gear and using interstate will definately screw things up alot more than you want.

Use a towing service.

Not being a smart butt, but are you sure you put it in neutral, then flip it back to 4x4 high to get it back out of 4x4?

My question is...do you leave it in drive or do you put it in Low 1? Cuz putting it in drive it will shift through gears but really hard. ?

Also..brake must be applied!

Start Truck, put it in Neutral, keep brake applied, turn 4x4 off, hold the brake a few seconds, you should hear it "click" and the light will go off. I usually step on it a second to see if it really came out, or if it is still engaged.

Do you have

an electronic or manual transfer case? See, this is why I am not really keen on those electronic ones... mine (manual) I can yank on the shifter myself, and not rely on some electric widget somewhere to do its job. But that's just me and my old ways.

Putting it in neutral worked !

That was the trick. I didn't realize you had to do that.

My wife borrowed the truck to take friends to some house up a long, steep, unpaved driveway. She put it in 4L.

I just asked her how fast she went. She said she kept it under 3800 RPM's. She had called a family member, who suggested that would be ok. I asked her how fast in MPH she went. She said 50 (Yikes!) 4L kind of revs up, and then a clunking noise is heard, followed by the truck jumping. It occures at 5MPH, and then just clunks at around 8 MPH. I just tested up and down the street by taking it out of 4L, and putting it back in. I also smelled a burnt smell around the truck when she came home.

What do you guys think is going on with 4L? I've never needed 4L, so I'm unsure about its' behavior. How smooth should it be? What kind of damage do you suspect it may have occured? Any other considerations as far as maintenace, after the 4L 50MPH ride?

Thanks so much for your replies, and the quick fix.

50 mph????

in 4Lo? She must've forgotten she had the transfer case in 4lo.

can't imagine why it would smell burned, there's no clutches in the transfer case.

I'd drive it normally, in 2hi (or 4hi if in snow or ice) for a few days, and see how it goes. I suspect it'll be just fine.

Things like this are why I'm extremly cautious in letting others drive my truck....
But seriously, if it shifts back into 2wd and 4hi everythings fine.

Thanks Guys

Thanks much. I appreciate all of your help. I agree, at least she won't be asking to borrow the truck for a while

This forum is great, I love the way everyone actually helps one another. Thank you again, and keep up the good work.

Just kidding. Good Luck.

funny

That's the funny thing, she said she did engaged it into 4L while running around 10MPH. As far as I knew, you had to be stopped to do it? Maybe there's more to it.

Thanks for the laugh.

That is the factory 4x4 low shift points at WOT, so that means at WOT it will shift at 3800rpms. She was racing.

just letting everyone know, atleast from someone who has done it, you can go 40mph in 4x4 low, if you keep it in drive. dont ask how i know this, its just one of those things you know through experience.

when in doubt, floor it!!
