Tbird Efan Install "Updated"

After sitting on my ****, i finally "completed" the mounting of my Tbird fan (3000cfm on low!). I still have to mount my new controller. I will be swapping from the MAD controller to the spal like asinatra. The tbird fan is an oem unit and should last longer than most aftermarket fans. We'll see. When this thing comes on, it will hold a leaf on my billet grill! It sucks (which is good). On to the pics!
The first pic shows that i notched the vertical lip of the radiator and the fan shroud.

This pic shows the metal strap that attaches to the fan and the radiator using the existing shroud bolts. I also used the derale plastic mounts as well as backup.

This pic shows that i used foam tape to help seal the fan AND reduce vibrations.

Ive got 2 L brackets that i am going to use to mount the Spal controller to the radiator core support ( pass side) so the controller is mounted perpendicular to the ground (lights upwards, wiring down).
Asinatra, i never did find the grey/red wire for the cylinder head temp sensor. I found the green/yellow wire that feeds the sensor from the PCM. This will work right?

Was there somthing you didnt like about the "Mad Enterprize" controller?

I used one for my Efans (Dual 14") and I thought it was flawless. INstructions were great, come on Exactly when I want them to...

I cant seem to get the adjustment on it. The Pot doesnt seem to work properly. It may just be me though. It comes on at 194 regardless. One reason is that it looks like crap imo
The spal has some variable speed capability that i was looking for too though PLUS it gets its temp signal directly from the PCM and isnt based on a secondary reading. It's ok, but i just like the spal setup better..

Very nice job! Certainly the route I'd take. What year Thunderbird? I've though about doing a Mark 8 radiator like on my mustang.

Davies Craig also makes some Thermal fan switches you may find useful.

Stock I'm sure it set to run at 205 or 209ish, do you plan to tweak it for optimum fuel mileage I imagine? Please let us know your impressions of part throttle performance and MPG impact if any. Thx!

Jerry

I think it is the same fan blades as the Mark 8 but this has a two speed motor (more efficient, less amps). It is an RF-24 (Motorcraft)fan and you can get for about $140. It is off a Mod motor 94-97 tbird. DCControl.com has some premade setups with this fan that look nice. I was really torn between the spal and the dcc but i went with the spal.
I picked up maybe 1/2 mpg with it. The engine is a LOT quieter now and seems to rev a little quicker. THe controller mounting is going to look slick when i get through with it. I just have to get the nerve to tie into the temp sender wire....

Question

Will Spal controller work with any fan? I have Mike Troyer's fan kit and would rather have the Spal controller.

If you wanted to run the fans separately, you would have to buy an add on relay. Call spal usa, they have great tech support. I talked to Britt Marolf there and he always replied to my emails and calls. Call them and find out what you will need. Asinatra has two fans but im not sure if he has the add on relay.

So how are you controlling the fans for AC? Fans should be on full blast at a stop even if the engine temp isn't up when the AC is on, are you guys wiring a secondary 12v input based on the AC compressor? How about speed? Factory fans turn off above 45-50mph (if they come w/ electric fans) to get more airflow at higher speeds as the efans are a hindrance at that point?

Anyone considered this controller..?

The one thing i have noticed is that at 45mph, the fan freewheels enough to light my led indicator, so they are rarely idle. The spal controller will come on at 150-160 to get turning and 100% output will be at 215 or so. My fans will spin at 70% output all the time. I liked that thought better than the constant starting/stopping. My fan only draws 13 or 15 amps at 100 High.

For the ac issue, i have a manual switch in the cab or the turns on at 150 or so anyway...

I think the "on at 70% above 150" strategy is probably decent and covers most scenarios but I'd really like a factory solution like the Efan equipped Fords since all of that can be set w/ the chip: low speed on/off and high speed on/off plus the AC override and the max speed on/off.. anyone know if the PCM has the functions and the harness contains the wires necessary to install a CCRM out of Mustang?
