COOLING FAN CLUTCH NOISE - VEHICLES BUILT
PRIOR TO 10/1/2004 - 5.4L AND 4.6L ENGINES

FORD:
2004-2005 F-150

ISSUE
Some 2004-2005 F-150 vehicles built prior to 10/1/2004 and equipped with a 5.4L or 4.6L engine, may exhibit a noise coming from the engine cooling fan. The noise may be described as a rolling engine idle, most noticeable just after a cold engine startup and before the fan clutch has warmed up.

ACTION
If the condition is verified, replace the cooling fan clutch per Workshop Manual Section 303-03. The condition can be verified by starting the vehicle cold, placing the transmission into gear and listening for a repeated increase and decrease in cooling fan noise.

So how do these TSB's work. I am almost positive I have the rough idle sound fan clutch, the clunk in drive shaft from stopped and I have only got 40,000 kms on my truck and they had to turn my brake rotors. How can I tell if they should be replacing my rotors and not just turning them. I would like to get all this stuff fixed before my bumper to bumper warranty is up. Can I just go in there and say hey "go thru your TSB's and anything that effects my truck fix"

Also if you guys have any info on computer tune versions or updates, like if a perso should go in and see if they have 'better' newer tunes available.

Its a 2004 screw lariat 4x4

It doesn't work that way. Dealers can't fix what ain't broke.

I really wish people would quit posting these TSB lists, it just causes a lot of confusion and misconceptions. People see huge lists of TSBs, and they're like "Oh, that applies to my truck, I want it done!" No. You've gotta realize, a TSB above anything else is an educated SWAG by engineers further up the food chain, intended to streamline diagnosis and repairs. Half of these stupid bulletins don't even work the way they're intended to. Some apply, some don't, some work, some don't. It's up to your dealer to inspect and diagnose your truck to determine the best course of action for a 100% fix - the TSBs are best used as a guideline, not the gospel.

That said, yes, there are some dealers out there that suck, and won't address even a well known concern. To them, I dunno what to do, other than to try another dealer, or contact Ford Customer Service.

Any info about this one?

05-9-23 MAY 05 Steering - Steering Column Clunk/Rattle Noise

I have an 05 that has a rattle that sounds like loose metal coming from the steering wheel column.

The Ford service department at my dealership said they think it's the aftermarket radio and are trying to charge $300+ for diagnosis (3 hrs at $100 per hour) and then a couple hundred to put in a new radio.

I mean you can drive the truck and blaintanly hear it coming from the steering wheel.

Glad my truck is not an '04-'05.

But I bet my 2006 will have a TSB or two as time rolls on!!! But @ 5600 miles all seems A-OK so far.
