I think the people that have to really watch what octane they run with level 3 are the ones at sea level. The air is most dense at sea level and could cause problems like detonation. Here in CO, I think that 91 octane (the best we have) would not be a problem on level 3 (93 octane). Less dense air = slightly less compression = less of a knock problem.

Let me throw this out there...I just loaded a level 2 program this morning. I had to fill up and since the level 2 says 87 octane is fine thats what I used. Then I got the thinking...if you do a custom tune (which I do to correct for my larger tires) the setting is still at 91 octane (the same as it is at the level 3 tune). Sure enough I checked and it showed the octane setting at 91. I turned it down to 89 and reloaded the tune. I know the new up date has timing setting but it should be the same issue. If you do a custom tune on level 2 I guess you still need to go in and set the octane level to 89 to be safe. Just a ....


Anybody know more about this or have any other input???? This really seems like it could be an issue, especialy when towing (like the level 2 is for).

Well, I read the manual to state that if you used the level 3 progam without change you must use 91 octane. If you used less octane fuel than 91 you must custom program.

Fuel Octane This Fuel Octane option helps determines the final ignition timing based on intended fuel octane rating. Using higher octane ratings will modify your timing and may help improve fuel economy as well as overall performance. However, choosing too high of an octane rating might cause detonation (pinging), which may cause serious harm to your engine. Lowering this value will not harm the engine but may reduce performance and economy. (Hint: Always try to match this value with the rating of the fuel you normally run, or 1 to 2 points higher.)
I am running a series of my own MPG tests and started with level 3 using 87 fuel with 87 custom, 87 fuel with 89 custom, and currently 89 fuel with 91 custom and saw none of the symtoms described by any of the people with problems. I ran over 1,000 miles with each tune all types of driving on the first two tunes. I also did not see any problems like those described in the 7,000 miles before I installed the Edge either. There may be an issue with the truck.

Do we know if Edge gives the entire tune or changes the trucks base tune with new parameters i.e. changes variables like we do from the menu screens?

Just as a little update to this. I drove to work and back (50 miles) today still on level 2 and 87. Everything seems fine. Mileage is still low, but the 7-6 shift puts me in rush hour traffic both ways, so who knows? I usually commute off hours (11-10). I think I have an 'off' tank of fuel. My truck has only sipped, or guzzled, fuel from one Circle K station since the dealer filled it for me.
