Exhaust Review Thread
Just got my magnaflow 15821 today and got it installed for $65 @ midas. Like others on this board I have to say WOOOOOOW. A must do mod for those looking at an exhaust. Nice deep throaty sound with no popping. Just a smooth exhaust sound. And I definitely feel the difference in throttle response. I had a flowmaster on my old 86 mustang GT and I must say that there is no comparision for me.
This mod gets the
award.I cannot wait for the rest of my stage 1 kit from Troyer performance. With the AF1 and xcal2 this truck will be fun to drive.

I am pretty sure it was not a kit, and the engine made a low popping that got rapidly quicker as she went faster, so I'm assuming that has to do with the supercharger they have in them. Aren't all cobra's supercharged, I hope not because I easily kept up with her until about 40mph then she slowly started to pull. I raced another mustang (I made a post about it), that made that SAME noise, but I lost early on so we let off and he took a turn. I wonder if there are "stage" packages like Roush, with SVT. I had my gf on the phone and it was right next to her work so I told her to look out (we were at the stoplight). She saw the entire thing. I then took a left into Mickey D's but on the way back there was a lowered chevy with exhaust, maybe an 03 because of the dull paint. I kept up with him pretty easily but it was a hard to judge the race because he would get on it and then let off. Anyways, my truck is not too quick with these flowmasters so I'm assuming that cobra did not have a supercharger for one reason or another, maybe that sound was a funky exhaust (someone on here would know), that 2 mustangs I've raced have had. The other mustang might have been a cobra too but it was way too dark to tell at the time and the race was too quick. Anyways, hope you enjoyed the daily adventures of my F-150. This is the only thing I like more about the flowmasters, I wish my magnaflows received this much attention.
2. The only factory S/C Cobra's are 03-04
3. SVT does not have different "stages" it's all or non!
4. Alot of people will put SVT or Cobra badges on their v-6 or gt models.
Just some insight for ya.
Exhaust noob question here. You guys that are buying the 18" Magnaflow, what size muffler body is that, the 5x8 oval, or other? Also, when they get installed, does the shop just reuse your old exhaust piping?

I bought the catback kit from www.troyerperformance.com as part of their stage 1 kit. My muffler is the 5x8x18 oval. You can just get the muffler and have it installed with the stock pipes. I think I remember some of the members here have done this. Try searching the site, you should come up with some posts on this.

I am curious as to what that sound I was hearing is, is that what the cobra's supercharger sounds like, I'm used to a whine, not a popping. With that said, I would say it sounded more like exhaust, and I did not hear a whine at all so I'm assuming it was a very good looking kit on a possible v6. I don't think I'd beat even a GT (believe me, I'm looking for one).

I love my Flowmaster 40.
However, Josiah I could swear you were talking about how upset you were that these mods weren't doing their jobs. Now your talking about beating a Mustang AND a 5.3 Chevy (which I believe you said had beat you before) but at the same time say how you think you lost power with the Flowmasters. It just doesn't add up . . .

Check out my gallery for the kit I purchased (16612). I guess my biggest thing for doing a full cat-back was the simple fact I can go back to stock with a simple bolt/un-bolt minus the welding of the tailpipe, and by the time I bought the $100 maggie muffler and had it welded to the stock pipe (which I do not like anyway), and bought a SS tip, I would have only saved about $50 and not of been able to return to stock easily.
See, I like the idea of the cat-back kit, BUT, who really needs all that stuff (save the tip) in stainless? I'd love to have the cat-back kit in Magnaflow's alumininzed finish. I, for one, don't care if my exhaust is all shiny/sparkly. Who looks under there anyway? Does Magnaflow make these cat-back kits in non-SS?

stainless pipe is NOT POLISHED stainless pipe, its just a metal that wont rust, its a lower grade that youll find int he tips and mufflers, and it will turn brown, but never rust. it is the same metal used in the OEM exhaust system, so a change to aluminized pipes would be a downgrade. Plus, with a bolt on, you get good mandrel bends, hangars that fit the stock mounting points, etc. Magnaflows are not cheap mufflers, but their systems are very well priced, for what you get. Just a 10 foot stick of stainless 2.5 inch pipe is about $90, a polished muffler is about $100, a good tip maybe $60, then youre talking labor to crush bend and halfass weld up a custom kit? bolt on is the way to go IMO
