NewTruck Issues

Hello all. New to the Site.

I just bought a NEW 06’ F-150 XLT with the 5.4V8 and have a question. It is just me or is this truck a dog? It seems to feel like it has power, but there is no speed there. 0-60 in like 10 seconds. I do notice when I get into it that is will almost redline and hold there for quite sometime until it shifts. I have never been in another “New” F150, but I have had many trucks in the last few yrs ,98’ RAM / 2000 F150 /98’,00’ &02’ Z71, and I have an 03 Duramax parked next to the Ford now. This new Ford is, By far, the SLOWEST of them all. I saw a guy at the store last nite with a new one and he feels the same as I.

Other issues are the Front Brakes. I can clean the wheels and in 5 miles they are covered in brake dust. I had the truck for 2 days and never went down a dirt road, but because of just wet roads, the motor looked like I took it thru a mud bog. Within the 1st week the windshield washer fluid nozzle froze up on me, and it wasn’t even that cold. The bed shakes all over the place, like it’s not even bolted down.

Other then the above, it seems to be a nice truck. The ride is nice and quiet and the interior is very comfortable. The 2000 Ford was a nice truck, the Ram was a big pile of **** (of Course), but all my GMC’s have been great (out of all 4, no problems to date). I thought I would buy this new style Ford and she what she has to offer.

Please don’t feel I’m bashing the truck, but compared to what I have had, I’m very disappointed.

Trust me, I feel your pain...

I still love my F150, but I wish she had more power or better gearing from the factory...

As for MPG, my Old 2000 Ford got 13.4, my Ram got 8-10. My 98 and 2000 GMC got around 16-17 and the 02 got 18. My Durmax gets 21(but that is a Diesel). These are all based on conservative driving. If I flogg it, the #'s go down, of course.

BTW.... All these were 4x4 Ex Cabs with the Big V8's. Rear ends were all 3.73 on the GMC's (Full Locking Diff) and Fords(limited Slip). Ram was 3.55 (noraml-slip). Tires sizes were left all stock, except the Ram, I put 315/70/16 on that.

Ahhhh yes.....

To resolve some of your problems I am afraird you will have to spend more money (kinda like what you have to do with Microsoft products, throw hardware at it):

1) Buy a Tuner, preferrably a Edge as it comes with a cool lookin POD that sits next to the driver side console. This will give you a little more power and better shifting....

2) Get rid of your stock brake pads and buy ceramic ones like Akebono's. The dust will be non-existent, and braking performance will be no-less than with the stock brakes, you'll be truley amazed. People tried to tell me it was because the truck free wheels (doesn't downshift) and to slow down more gradually etc etc but that wasn't it. Ford decided to put cheap stock brakes on the truck, like they did with so many other parts.

3) Dirty engine, others in this forum have pointed this out too but I have yet to find a post that has any suggestions on how to prevent this.

4) Washer nozzles freezing up, you'll need to see the dealer about that one.

5) Bed shakes, think about getting a spray in liner like Rhino lining or Line-X. I have heard this helps alleviate some of the bed shakes... also take it into the dealership and have them check it out. Mine shakes and rattles a bit but not too bad....

Quality is Job #1 at Ford, especially now that they are laying off 30,000 people. Oops, we made a 30,000 person mistake....

I put up with the brake dust for 14,000 miles. For 45.00, I changed to ceramic pads. They stop great and no more dust. I used the Morse pads from Advanced Auto Parts.

Thanks for the replies.

As for the Edge, I have on in my Dmax (let just say that truck isn’t stock………), so I’m familiar with how it works.

I was going to try the ceramic pads, but 1st I will call my dealer and pi@@ and moan about how my GMC’s doesn’t leave dust. My Dmax has 88K and the brakes are still original. I had them checked @ 75K and they still have or half pad and are wearing evenly.

The Truck came with a bedliner, actually a pretty nice one. Since it’s a 2 yr lease, I can’t justify the spending $500 just so the bed doesn’t rattle.

I'm guessing the FX4 model with the skid plates would have stopped some of the mud flingin' into the motorbox.

Question on the Pads, were they easy to change? I’m somewhat mechanically inclined and have done a few brake jobs in my day, but are there going to be any surprises for me?

As far as I’m concerned, all these issues should have never been brought up. These are all simple things that FORD should have taken into consideration while building them. Try to save $5 on a set of pads…… I’ll think twice before buying another? Is the $5 worth losing a customer?

I didn't install my Akebono pads, had Midas do it for $35. They didn't have any problems. They installed all 4 in 30 minutes.

I'd have to say it has been the best MOD or part I have had put on the truck though. The brake dust was driving me INSANE.....

I got my pads from tirerack.com, they were the:
"Akebono ProAct Ceramic Pads" They have a part lookup deal at the site to ensure you get the right front and rear pad parts.

Lots of people have these on their F-150's and Akebono Ceramic pads come stock on many vehicles today, like the NEW Ford Mustang.

I think many of us on this board have suffered through "issues" with our trucks. I have had to take mine in for servicing on so many issues I wouldnt even know where to begin. I still love my truck but I feel like I should have a cot and refrigerator down at my service center.

You know its getting bad when the service techs start complaining about how many times you have had to bring your truck in for stupid ****e. I still love the look and feel of my truck just have had to deal with alot of minor issues that needed worked out.

As for your truck being slower start by taking it in and getting the latest updated PCM reflash. If that doesnt help it a tuner will. But also remember our trucks are heavier then all the rest of them out on the market. And keep in mind you have to ask yourself why you bought a truck did you really buy it for speed? If you did you should have decided on a Mustang GT or Vette your speed demons would have been a hell of alot more satisfied.

Just my 2cents on the matter though...

My truck shifts the same way, no power what so ever. Im sure if I dyno this pig it would be in low to mid 100 hp range. You shouldnt have to order a programer to make your truck move. I also have an 05 Tahoe and that truck moves. Day and night difference. Im take a long trip in the F-150 and im nervous it might not make it, it sucks that I have a truck thats in the 30k range in price that has so many problems. I have 2k in miles and when the warrenty is up this truck is getting traded in hopefully for a diesel.

I bougt this truck for a daily driver to keep miles of my other truck, so the speed isn't really an issue. But, why shoudl I compromise a litte bit of GO-Go juice just beacuse it's a Ford? The GMC's and Hemi's can do it for the same price. I also plan on towing my small duck boat around during the duck season. It doesn't weight much, but I'm having 2nd thoughts if it can do it. I know it can't pull the big one (13,000 Lbs), but that is what Dmax is for.

Oh yeah as for wanting a vehicle for speed....... That can also be done with a Duramax. My 7200lb truck can beat most cars I pull up to at the light. Well ,not the new Z06, but a mustang GT is no problem.

replacing the brake pads is a simple job. Couple of wrenches and a C-clamp. I did mine at about 13000 miles to get rid of the dust. It may just be that your truck needs to learn your driving habits. It takes the computer awhile. You may even need to disconnect the battery, turn on the lights for a few minutes to drain the reserve, and let the computer relearn. I switched from an 02 Silverado and would not want to go back to Chevy. My truck runs great and is by far smoother and quieter than any truck I have owned.

Maybe you haven't been in a Not-so-Stock-Duramax, but if you ever get the chance, You'll think twice. So guys have these trucks running the 1/4 mile in the low 11's.

I'm sure your max is quick. Besides my little Honda only has 140ish horsepower.
