Shifter Broke During LT Shifter Mod

I can no longer shift because a plastic piece is wedged between the back of the button and the back of the shifter. It's extremely hard to explain, but my point is, I can't even get a screwdriver in there because it's in Park and it's too close to the dash. I need to get the damn thing out of there and nobody mentioned how to get it out. I've done everything and read it about 8 times now, every page. Here is where I'm at, I can't shift because it broke on me but I'd like to remove it so I can at least operate my vehicle before I replace the shifter's "innards". The sooner you respond the better, this is my only way to college, so I have a weekend to work on it.

override button?

I remember reading about a shifter lock override button that is in the center console. The threads about upgrading to flow-thru consoles give detailed pix. I think this would let you move the shifter enough to get the screwdriver in there.

Good luck.

I'd prefer to just be able to take off the shifter like most were able to do.

That sucks dude. That's precisely the reason I don't like taking things apart in my truck.
Hope you get it all back together in working order soon.

I'm not familiar with this mod, I must admit, but if you give more info I can try to help think of a remedy. How 'bout a stubby screw driver or even bend one in a vise, for instance.

How wedged are you talking about? Too wedged that a good blast from an air compressor wouldn't blow it out or at least move it a little for you?

Ok, I'll try and help you through this. This is one mod that I spent forever on. It's a ton more work than anyone describes and takes a ton of custom fitting to get it to work. Mine still isn't perfect as my chrome sleeve still falls down just ever so slightly.

Now if you can envision what is under that black plastic. It's a white plastic "tube" that is about the diameter of the spring that is in there (BE CAREFUL WITH THAT SPRING AND DO NOT FORCE ANYTHING OR BEND IT).

There is a black piece of plastic that hinges back into the white plastic tube and pulls it up when pushing the button in and allows you to shift gears. The spring serves as pushing the button back out and pushing the white tube back down, engaging the gear.

Do you have a more accurate picture as the only one I see that looks like yours, has the shifter pulled all the way back by the leather arm rest center console.

Wow! Now that's a mod that hardly seems worth the trouble!

Thanks Duke but I got it.

Ricod59 sent me this via email and it was the reason I couldn't get it off.

I did this mod five or six months ago If i recall correctly you have to slide the black plastic piece (it kind of looks like a circular cage) which is under the chrome shifter shaft cover, down. This black plastic cage piece is held up to the main shifter body "guts" by some plastic barbed catches that slide into the top of that cage piece but then can't slide out very easily. You have to pry the cage piece down, then slide it down like the the chrome shaft cover. After that I believe the guts of the shifter will slides traight up off of the metal rod in the center (which actually does the shifting). Don't forget there is a spring inside that will pop out when you pull the "guts" off the steel shaft. Good luck
Thanks again Rico, I've finished the install but the spring that pulls the button back in is broke. I broke a couple things in there but it now looks great. It's drying with Krazy Glue in there right now, I reused the old top with no modifications. I ripped the old handle to shreds just pulling it off out of frustration, I went my own custom route 50% of the time and it worked out ok, but I broke more than most

There really is more work than most posted about, but it's a unique touch. I enjoy customizing my truck, and don't think I can stop no matter how hard they get. I'll post the pics with my gay razr if anyone's interested.
