Heated Mirror Question

I just bought a 2006 F150 Lariat. The window sticker says it has 'PWR/HTD Mirrors'.

I understand the heated mirrors work on the same button as the Rear Window Defroster.

Question: Do the heated mirrors work by electricity or air from the defroster?

The reason I ask is that I called and talked with the saleman about it and he said the little rubber vent going through the door (seen near the hinge when you open the door) directs air to the mirrors, thus heating them.

I call BS on this. Is there suppose to be a little symbol on the mirror that shows you have heated mirrors? Mine has nothing. I think I have a new truck that doesn't have what the window sticker says it should.

Thanks

That is what I thought.

Should there be a little symbol on the mirrors indicating that they are heated? I remember seeing something like a little square with a squiggly line by it (saw it on an Expedition)

It is electric. It may not have the heated icon on the morror. I have a set of the king ranch mirror's and they do not have the icon on the mirror, but believe me they work. they work great.

If there may or may not be an icon, how can I tell if I have them? Being in Texas right now, it is 70+ degrees so frost is not an option.

I have the rear defroster and there is a button for it on the dash. Is there a difference between a button for just the rear defroster and one for both rear and mirrors?

If your mirror housings have the turn signal on the bottom, then you have heated mirrors.

From what I can tell on the button issue is that according to the owner's manual the only difference I can see is that if you have only the rear defroster, the button will have an R. If you have both rear and heated mirrors, there is no R. My button has an R.

Can anyone confirm this? I have a feeling I am about to go around and around with the dealer on this since they are claiming that it is air from the defrosters that heat the mirrors.

Thanks

Mine has the turn signals on it.

Man, I just wish there was a way to actively confirm. Right now I have no symbol on the window and the button on the dash is different than the owner's manual dictates.

Thanks

oh, I just re-read you post, you say you have the rear defroster. Well, if you push that button, then it turns on both the heated mirrors and rear defrost at the same time.

So is it a given that if you have the rear defroster that you also have heated mirrors?

Thanks

Not always. But like I mentioned, it is a given that if you have the turn signal mirrors, then they have the heated mirror glass.

There is another way to tell Strickland. Just turn on the defroster button and wait a minute or two and the put the palm of your hand on the mirror glass. You WILL be able to feel them getting warm...even on a warm day. As stated previously, if you have the turn signals in the mirror's then you have heated mirrors.

Cool. This is what I was looking for.

I do have the turn signal mirrors.

However, as stated above, the button on the dash has the R on it and from the way I read the OM, it shows that when you have only the rear defroster.

I will try the test. Thanks!

Heated outside mirrors (if equipped)
Heated mirrors remove ice, mist and
fog. To activate the heated mirrors,
press the rear defrost button R
located on the climate control panel.
Refer to Rear Window Defrost in
the Climate Controls chapter for
more information.
On vehicles not equipped with rear
defrost, press the heated mirror
control located on the climate
control panel, refer to the Climate
Controls chapter.

Rear defrost: Press to defrost the rear window. Refer to
Rear Window Defrost for more information. If vehicle is equipped with
both Rear Defrost and Heated Mirrors, the same control will activate
both.

Text above is from the owners manual.

The heated mirrors work by elecricity, not from the defrost air.

The rubber vent going to the door I believe sends air to the vent on your door to defog your side windows when the defroster is on.

The mirrors are done by electric because at times when I have used them, they have gotten the lines of frosted and unfrosted sections like a window with a rear defroster does.

Your salesman is a complete moron, or thinks you are, if he's insisting they're done by air going into the door vent.
