F150 as compared to Expedition
Hey folks,
just curious, the f150 is wildly popular and certainly good looking, so despite a favortism toward the Expedition, I have been looking at a few pickups. However, the more I look, the more I realize how much more practical the expedition is. I know this is a personal thing, but the exped seems to offer so much more unless you use your truck for work.
I'm not trying to generate a controversy, but am sincerely interested in how/why you find the f150 a better choice. I do think they look better and have all of the creature comforts that the exped has, but the thing that works better for me on the exped is the locking/security it offers for my gear. I use my veh for hunting and fishing, so being able to keep fly rods, guns and all the accessories that go with these sports, safe and secure, is my driver. Weather protection and not having stuff slide around the bed are other reasons. I also use it to haul my family around, but the 4 door f150 would work too.
The only thing i have trouble w/ is transporting fuel, game and garbage since these items are in the cab w/ you. For this, i use the hitch haul.

Oh man let the blasting begin....................LOL. I would all depend on what you need a vehicle to do. We have both an Expedition 4x4 and an F-150 Super Crew, and both fill an individual need.
The Expedition provides transportation for up to 6 people in comfort (buckets seats in the front and rear) and safty (full air bag curtains and over all size). Allows the hauling or larger items with the back seat folded down. Will pull a nice size trailer if needed. Has the rear entertainment system to keep the Grand Daughter happy watching Barney or Dora. The heated and AC seats feel good. Average MPG is 16.7, We have every option that was avalible on it, from tire pressure monitors to Nav system. Over all it is a nice do anything truck.
The F-150 is a nice light duty truck, the limited size of the SCrew bed limits how large of an item you can haul. The seats in the XLT are like sitting on a wooden bench that reclines. Over all ride is not bad, seems to ride smoother than the Expedition however. Will hold six people, but it is snug. I bought mine for the gas savings. Yeah, sounds weird doesn't it? But by the time you figure in the price difference between diesel for my F-450 and gas for the F-150. Then figure in a few extra miles to the gallon, the savings based on only 12,000 miles was $2,000. So for running around in town and some light duty ranch jobs the Screw fits the need...............OH and it's not a bad looking truck either..........and the deal price was fantastic.
Again look at your needs and pick which is right for you. If I could only have one of the two, I would go Expedition.

I'm fortunate enough to own both. The Screw hauls stuff better, the Expy hauls people better. Sounds to me like the Screw would be perfect for you. All you need to do is install a tonneau cover on the bed like me, and you will be all set.

I've never had an Expy, but I did do the whole SUV thing and I didn't like it that much. I'm in the military, and I am frequently moving and driving cross country (wifey gets homesick easily). As it turns out, my 6.5 ft bed with a cover has just enough cargo space for everything that we need to survive for 2-3 weeks. The SUV could hold every thing, but it took about 2 hours to get everything in it "just right" so that it all would fit. That and I was tired of driving around a "mommymobile"
We had a '97 Expedition for 9 years and 99K miles. We bought 2006 Super Crew to replace it (vs. another Expy) because we needed the practicality of the open bed. My wife has horses and on waaayyy too many occassions she would bring home hay in the Expy. Do you realize how hard it is to get hay out of the carpet/fabric/headliner? I'll spare you the details.
The increased towing capacity of the new F-150 + having a bed was the clincher for us. On the other hand, losing an extra row of seats (really helpful when family comes to visit) and not having a "secure" place to leave coats and packages is probably the biggest disadvantage in switching to the F-150. But I can live with that vs. hours of vacuuming.

I own both...my 2004 Lariat Screw and my wife's 04 Eddie Bauer Expy. Both are great trucks. I like driving my truck better, but the Expy MAY ride a little better. I have a hard cover on the back of my truck SO really if you figure in lugage both trucks will carry the same amount of people (asuming the 3rd seat is folded down).
I would recommend a used Expy over a new one though...I bought my wifes when it was 14months old and saved over $20K off sticker. It looks like the deperciation on the SUV is more than the it is on the truck.
Her truck (with her driving) averages 15.5 MPG and mine (with me driving and 24s) averages 14.2MPG.

I am also fortunate enough to own both an Expy and F-150. I use my F150 for work, hauling and every time a buddy needs moved. I use the Expy for everyday family use. What you should determine is just how much hauling your gonna do. If your only going to haul huge or heavy stuff (or actual garbage as you posted) a few times a year, and purchase the Expy, you could rent a small trailer for that. I utilize my F150 as a work horse and I utilize the Expy as a “night on the town” vehicle. Both vehicles are great, Expy has more bells and whistles and still has the ability to carry around cargo in the rear. But when the time comes for me to get fertilizer and toipsoil for the yard, I walk passed the Expy and use the 150. When its time to go to a wedding, the 150 stays home. I feel blessed to have the best of both worlds and wish you luck with your hard decision….
Get a cap for you F150. It's like getting an Expy with a hose out back end. I just got mine last week, but the truck is dirty and I'm not washing it when its -4 out. I did include some pics of other users here who have them.
