Added Power mirrors to STX
Added Power mirrors to STX

I put power mirrors (XLT 2005 take offs) into my STX this week. The switch is the same size as the stock New Body switch, just from a different Ford.
I did not want to cut into the one piece dash below the headlight switch, so I mounted the control in the door panel. That way, if I ever find drivers Black FX4 panel (to match the passenger one I have now) I won't have an extra switch.
Putting the power mirrors in was rather simple, but there were a couple odd things.
First step was trying to find the four pin plug in for the mirrors. Ford does not sell the pig tail, and unlike earlier F-150's there is no wiring sticking out of the mirror. No problem. The four pins are a match for a small Molex connector. So I used a couple from my computer parts. Very tight fit, but work fine.
Biggest part of the job was pulling both door panels. Then I had to draw three wires from the passenger mirror to the driver’s door.
I needed a constant hot wire into the driver’s door. The factory fuse is 5 amps for the mirrors so I added a 5 amp fuse holder under the dash. My alarm and keyless door pad are fused in the same location so that made sense.
Interestingly, the manual mirrors have 4 studs with nuts holding them, the power only three. I would guess they feel there is more force used on adjusting the manual mirror. The fourth stud is buried inside the door and it is rather easy to drop the nut into the door while removing. Then you can spend a half hour on your knees finding the nut.
Good news though, after digging the nut out, I had a spare plastic speaker mount nut, and a rather nice Allen wrench, both of which were lost by the dealer when they were inside the door. Their loss, my gain.
The only really hard part was cutting into the nice plastic on my door panel. I wasn't too worried as if I damaged it, then I would have an excuse to buy the drivers FX4 panel... But no such 'luck'. It cut fairly easy with a motto tool and a set of number two files.
Getting it exactly mounted was not easy.
A curious thing about the door panel, it is not straight. It bends in sharply at the top. So if I matched the word Mirrors on the switch with gravity up and down, it would be very twisted counter clockwise. If I matched it to the panel, it would be very twisted clockwise. So I sorta split the difference. The camera shows it off a little, but to the naked eye it looks straight.
If someone was doing this swap, I would recommend getting a smaller window switch than the stock one. I almost used an explorer switch, smaller, almost rectangular, but at the last minute I decided on the shape that Ford planned for the year body.
The switch is very easy to find in the dark, and it is not too far from shoulder so I can sit normally and adjust the mirrors. I was concerned about that. If you have short arms it might not be the best place, but it is not bad.

Overall, less work than putting in locks or windows. A lot less work than putting in windows with three switches.
On your truck I would put the switch up where I did, but I would use an Explorer, or Taurus switch. It would look good with your door top mounted window switches. It would be a lot easier to do, as you would have plenty of room for the smaller rectangular switch. My big round switch was the biggest that could go in the little hollow at the top.
If I was doing your truck, I would hit a wrecking yard and yank the wire harness out of an older ford to get the three connectors (passenger mirror, driver mirror, and switch). The color code is the same from the early 90's to today.
Yellow, violet, and green to passenger mirror, blue, red, yellow to drivers.
Ground and power complete the job.
Although, to make my switch work the way I wanted, I had to reverse the power and ground signals. Just swapped the wires in the harness. Since it is a closed system it works fine that way.
Drove it around town today. I do like the bigger mirrors. I suppose I should have sprung for power folding, or something like that, but I wanted to keep the whole job under a 100. Then I will sell my old (7k miles...) mirrors and get at least a third of that back. Cheap, easy mod.
