5.4 Towing Numbers

Did some towing this past weekend and these were some of my numbers.(04 Supercab 3:73 Gears) I was pulling a 20 ft Legend SS Alumacraft Boat about 175 miles one way. I took the overdrive out, since the hills on the way there are brutle. On the way there we got stuck on the interstate in a stand still and did alot of idleing. Filled up when we finally got there and got 10.14mpg. On the way home, a straight shot with the cruise on 75, and I ended up getting 10.61 mpg. When I usually go down there I can get 18 mpg going 80 with the overdrive on. I know that the ovedrive makes a huge difference, and was wondering if these numbers compare with anyone else that tows a boat?

Those sound about right to me. Pulling a boat is a whole lot of extra work for the engine and transmission. Especially with the overdrive off and climbing over hills.

Pulling an empty two-horse trailer with my SCrew (5.4l, 3.73) averaged about 12.5 on the highway. That was about a 40 mile trip.

Those are on par. I notice a big difference when towing my neighbor's boat compared to my enclosed trailer. Both are about the same weight, but the boat just sucks more gas (about 1 mpg) I think because of the aerodynamics.

I pull a 30 foot travel trailer (5000lbs) and I average about 11 MPG. I get better mileage on level ground (duh) but when I get into the hills in Alabama it drops to about 9mpg, so I average about 11. Mine has the 5.4 and the 3.55, pulls it like a dream. I also have an 18' flatbed that I pull my Kubota 3130 with a front end loader on and it pulls it great too. I havent had to pull it far enough to get a average mileage, mostly just short trips.

Don't pull any trailers, but at cruising speed my truck gets around 5 mpg better with the over drive on, rather than being off.
