I think 4.10s aren't enough with the 4.6L. This engine likes revs. I'm going with 4.56s. I have 20s and 32 inch tires by the way, so the 4.56s would be nice with the 33s.

that 1mpg loss is a guess based on my experience with those rpms. then again I have a 5.4 not a 4.6 so it might be different too. I find it hard to believe any one could gain gas milage at 75 to 80 mph going up to 4.10 gears. the rpms would definitely be higher. as far as weather 4.30's would be better than the 4.10 with the 4.6 engine I am not sure. the 4.6 might do better with the higher rpms than the 5.4 therefore makeing the 4.30's a better choice. you could vary possibly end up with the same gas milage between the two on an average between city and highway driveing. 4.30's being better in the city and 4.10 being better in city. tough call.

He's ABSOLUTELY correct. I had 4.56s in my 5.4L Lariat w/ the stock 32" 4WD tires, and later went to a 305/55 20" Nitto Terra Grappler, which is 33". The truck GAINED 1 MPG around town and only lost 1.5 mpg on the highway. My biggest loss in MPG was the bigger wheels and tires. I recently ditched the 4.56s for 4.10s because I no longer daily drive the truck, and no longer tow a 6k lb load that I used to. I only drive the truck on the highway now, and at 75+ MPH. I also ditched the 4.56s due to the noise they made over the factory OE ford gears. When I went 4.10, I installed the new 9.75" Ford Racing 4.10 R&P. They are just as quiet as stock 3.73s. I am pleased w/ the 4.10s, but the truck definitely tows like crap again. With 4.56s, the converter would stay locked in O/D on any overpasses or light passing. Now with the 4.10s towing a 1200 lb trailer, it takes 1/2 throttle to get around slower cars in the left lane, and enough throttle to unlock the converter in O/D to get over some overpasses......PLAIN EMBARRASSING! With a 4.6, I'd ONLY go with a 4.56, but if you really are fearing highway MPG loss, get 4.30s at the minimum. If my Superior 4.56s were quieter, I would have left them alone. Looking back now, I wish I picked up the new Ford Racing 4.56 9.75 gear set. If only a 4.30 was made for us 5.4 guys with the 9.75 diff!!!

that was a nice review. it is nice to hear from someone who has tried both and I believe those gas milage numbers. noise is another thing that has steered me away from the 4.56's. and I have heard they run hotter too. I would choose the 4.30 if it was an option for me front and rear. actually Robert045.4 someone dose make the 4.30's for our 9.75 rear but not our front 8.8 reverse cut gear. I might just wait and hope someone starts makeing the 4.30 for the front differential.

oh and 05STX the more I think about it the more I think the 4.30's might be the better choice especially for the 4.6. I am thinking that with the 4.6 the gas milage gained in city might be balanced equally by the gas milage lose on the highway. and the 4.6 can definitely use the extra gear. keep us posted on your results such as gas milage before and after and performance and any noise they might produce. thanks

Yeah, I had heard that someone was making a 4.30 set for the rear, but after my one and only aftermarket gear experience, I am sticking with OE ford gears from now on. It's simply crazy...my Ford Racing 4.10 set are SILENT as my stock 3.73s, but the Superior 4.56s whined like a little girl around 50-55 mph and in several other areas of speed/coast/acceleration. After nearly 10 years of owning mustangs and other fords, I have come to the realization that the only genuinely quiet gear sets are the Ford sets. If you ask any mustang tuner shop if an aftermarket gear set will be as quiet as stock, 99 of 100 will say no. With that being said, BUY a FRPP (Ford Racing) 4.30 or whatever gear set you decide on. With the 4.6, you get full selection of 8.8" R&P gear sets from Ford Racing.

I have heard that the ford gears are the brand to stick with and I will do that when the time comes. I will probably end up getting the 4.10 gears as I doubt ford will make the 4.30's for my truck.

Nope....3.55, 3.73, 4.10, and 4.56 for the 9.75. It sucks. Since the mustang shares the 8.8 w/ the 4.6 trucks, they have everything from 2.73-5.13 available from Ford.

I love the M3. Kinda sad not owning a mustang anymore though. I'm still keeping my F-150 and the wife's 04 Explorer w/ a 4.6. Before I sold my last mustang, the 01 Bullitt, our house only had mod motor powered Fords parked in the garage and driveway The beauty of LEASING the M3 is that I'm forced to put miles on it and let the F-150 sit, so my truck has seen about 500 miles in the last 4 months. In August of 08 when I turn in the keys (of the then beat to hell) M3 , my F-150 will probably only have 20k miles on it. Besides the tax benefit for my business of leasing a car instead of owning, the main idea was to spend 36 months thrashing a luxury sports car instead of pouring thousands in mods into a rapidly depreciating mustang that I spent all my time pampering. Leasing......who cares?!? It's not my car

Sorry for the off-topic rambling.

I think the quality of the setup has more to do than the ratio of the gears in regards to how much noise (if any) they make. I'd go with a tighter shim set at the pinion to minimize tip in whine, and setting the pinion bearing preload on the higher end of spec. Granted, I don't have very much experience in gearsets steeper than 4.10s or so, but I still think a properly setup ring and pinion shouldn't be noisy.

Well, I scheduled my appointment at the gear place yesterday. 4.56s go in on 12/16! Question: Can the dealer fix my speedometer after the gear swap? I won't quite have the cash for a tuner until January and want the speedo as accurate as possible.
